Philadelphia Eagles vs Carolina Panthers Odds & Game Pick (2021)

Carolina failed their first true test of 2021, coming up lame against Dallas 36-28 last week. The defense, which had been balling out, looked overmatched. This week, they will face the Eagles’ offense that is in the bottom of the league in points per game (23.5), despite racking up plenty of yardage. This disparity has left their supporters to question QB Jalen Hurts’ ability to win. Especially after last week’s loss to Kansas City where the offense struggled through 3 quarters to get anything going. Will Carolina plug up the holes Dallas opened in their defense or can Philadelphia finally turn all of those yards into points?

Overview

Panthers start RB Christian McCaffrey is optimistic about returning to the field after missing last week with an ailing leg. His availability for Sunday should clear up before the end of the week, but already appearing in practice is a positive step. Chubba Hubbard filled in adequately last week, but CMC’s presence changes everything for Carolina’s offense. But, Carolina will need to focus on getting back to playing good defense more than who is in their backfield if they want to defeat Philadelphia. Last week, they allowed 245 yards rushing and now face a Top 10 rushing offense.

Philadelphia’s defense hasn’t fared well at all in 2021. They rank near the bottom in rushing yards allowed and haven’t defended the pass well either. The talent isn’t there for the Eagles, so asking them to shut down a capable offense like Carolina is a tall order. They’ll depend on QB Jalen Hurts to keep the chains moving and make a few key plays to help end their three-game losing streak. Hurts has put up spectacular numbers, just not in the column Eagles’ fans want — the win column.

Trends

  • Philadelphia is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 ROAD games
  • Totals have gone OVER 45 in 6 of the Eagles last 10 games
  • Carolina is 3-0 ATS in the last 3 games as a FAVORITE
  • Totals have gone UNDER in 6 of Carolina’s last 7 games overall
  • Philadelphia leads the all-time series 7-5

Bottom Line

Neither defense is so stifling that FanDuel Sportsbook‘s total of 45 can’t be met on Sunday. Both Carolina and Philadelphia’s offenses are in the top half of the league in yardage, so we fully expect plenty of first downs and scoring chances. After watching the Panthers spit the bit last week versus Dallas, it is hard to be confident in Sam Darnold without CMC behind him. If Carolina wants to be considered a playoff contender in 2021, however, they will need this victory. We see the, squeaking one out, but the Eagles keeping the final score inside of the field goal spread. Certainly not as confident in the bet against the spread here, so take it down to 0.5 units.

Prediction: Panthers 24, Eagles 23

The Picks: Philadelphia +3.0 | 0.5 units, OVER 45 | 1.0 units
