Despite holding the #2 seed in the NFC playoffs coming into this week, the Rams could (if the Cardinals win earlier in the day) have yet to clinch their own division and need a win in this one to lock it up. On the other side of this matchup, the 49ers could (if the Saints win earlier in the day) need a win to get into the playoffs, as their quarterback Jimmy G deals with yet another injury (thumb).

Overview
Things were only looking up for the 49ers over the back half of the season as they’ve won seven of nine down the stretch including a 23-7 win last week vs. Houston. The week before that, however, in a 17-20 loss to the Titans, quarterback Jimmy G suffered a partially torn ligament in his right thumb.
After sitting out last week, his status for this one is up in the air. If he isn’t able to go, rookie and presumed incumbent QB Trey Lance would get the start this weekend against the Rams.
Having won five in a row in their own right, the Rams are getting hot (and healthy) at exactly the right time. For the first time this season, running back Cam Akers could be active.

Bottom Line
The story lines are endless in this one and we won’t know until kickoff just how meaningful this game is going to be. While winning five straight over the Rams is certainly not nothing, I like for that to turn here with a Rams team that will almost certainly need this one.
In addition to the possible return of Akers and potentially wrapping up the NFC West, the Rams will also be motivated offensively by getting Cooper Kupp history. Sitting just 136 yards short of passing Calvin Johnson for the single season receiving record, expect Kupp to get going early and for the Rams to run away with this one and the division.
