The Longshots: Wednesday’s Top Underdog Plays (8/4)

Do you want to win a lot of money without risking much? Who doesn’t? That is the basis this Longshots article series is built on. Three or four times per week, we will find a considerable underdog or funky special line to toss a small wager on and then root like hell for the upset! We will play all “dog” parlays, big event specials, or perhaps literally throw darts at a dart league prop. But, regardless of the sport, the payouts will always be 10 to 1 (+1000) or better. Additionally, we will include one LEAN on a 4 to 1 (+400) or better line for your consideration.

Most importantly, you should never wager money you aren’t willing to lose. Knowing your bankroll limitations is doubly true when betting on the long odds we recommend in these articles. Most pros recommend that you formulate a 1 unit value for standard bets, so bets placed here will be smaller than that — think 0.1 unit increments. Meaning, if you typically wager $10 on a -110 line, you should drop $1 on these 10:1 or greater odds.

Without further adieu, here are today’s longshots.

Early Thursday morning in Toyko, some of the world’s greatest athletes will walk, not run, for the gold! Men’s 20km walk is a curious sport, but one of elite fitness. This year’s field is wide open, with the favorite Toshikazu Yaminishi (JPN) at +333 to win. Yet, we are in search of a long shot — with hopes of standing atop the podium. If walking races aren’t your thing, there are plenty of members of the Discord Olympics channel posting bets 24 hours a day. Join us!

We look no further than the reigning 2016 Olympic silver medalist, Cai Zelin of China, to find that long shot. Zelin has performed well in competitive walking’s grandest stages. In the 2012 Olympics, he finished 4th. Then, at the 2015 World Championships, Zelin crossed in 5th place before claiming silver in Rio. What has the Chinese walking sensation done of late? Since the start of 2019, Cai Zelin has broken 1:25:00 in five races, 1:22:00 three times, 1:20:00 in two events, and 1:18:00 once. His experience could come into play as the competition lacks a heavy favorite.
