2020 NFL Draft Prop Bets: CeeDee Lamb Draft Position

Every NFL draft has its own unique traits. Some drafts are considered deep at the quarterback position whereas other drafts may have what is considered just a handful of promising prospects at other positions.

The 2020 NFL draft is widely considered to be chock-full of talent at wide receiver. While many teams will use first-round picks on the top wide receivers, other teams will feel they can wait and still find talented receivers later in the draft.

Those are just some things to consider when wagering on prop bets on wide receivers in this draft. There is no doubt that Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb is a first-round talent. Where he will be selected in the first round is up for debate.

Here is our prediction on CeeDee Lamb’s draft position. (odds courtesy of FanDuel)

CeeDee Lamb Draft Position (Over 12.5 -102, Under 12.5 -126)

The Case for the Over

To clarify, betting the over means you are predicting that Lamb is selected either 13th overall or later. Lamb is likely competing with Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III of Alabama to be the first wide receiver selected. All three receivers possess similar skill sets. Jeudy is an excellent route runner with blazing speed who excels at catching the deep ball. Ruggs III  is also a burner as evidenced by his 4.27 40-yard dash at the combine. That time was tied for the fourth-fastest by a receiver in combine history.

CeeDee Lamb does not possess the same speed as the other two receivers. His 4.50 40-yard dash ranked outside of the top 20 for all receivers who ran at the combine. Teams that will look for speed first and foremost may be more enticed by the Alabama duo.

Within the first 12 picks, a realistic case for just two teams to use a first-round pick on a wide receiver can be made. The New York Jets at No. 11 can certainly use a top receiver, especially after Robby Anderson signed with the Panthers. In addition, the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 12 are in desperate need of a playmaker on the outside. Tyrell Williams has not established himself as a No. 1 option. The appeal of a top receiver on the outside would take a defense’s attention away from tight end Darren Waller who is coming off a career year.

However, the Raiders own the No. 19 pick as well. In a draft that is considered deep at wide receiver, it is possible Las Vegas addresses other glaring needs at No. 12 and use the 19th pick to select a solid wideout. For example, the Raiders need a cornerback and at No. 12 would likely be in a position to draft the second-best cornerback available.

The Case for the Under

Betting the under on CeeDee Lamb’s draft position means you are taking the stance that he will be chosen with the 12th pick or earlier. As mentioned, the most likely landing spots would be to the Jets at No. 11 or the Raiders at No. 12.

Optimists about Lamb’s 40-yard dash will say that he was projected to run in the 4.60-4.65 range. Thus, his 4.50 time exceeded many people’s expectations by a wide margin.

Lamb is also considered by many scouts to be a better overall route runner than Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III. Though he lacks the top speed of his competitors, he has proven he can get open against any defender. Lamb’s game is considered more versatile than the other receivers in that he can make plays at all three levels. He can also contribute on special teams as an explosive kick and punt returner.

Skeptics of Jeudy and Ruggs III may claim that they each helped build the other’s success. Opposing defenses had to be concerned with the bruising running of Najee Harris as well as the other outside threats of DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle when facing Alabama. Smith was actually Alabama’s leading receiver in terms of yards and touchdowns.

Meanwhile, CeeDee Lamb was the primary focus of every defense when facing Oklahoma. His statistics never suffered, as he had 19 more than triple the amount of receptions than all but one teammate. In addition, his 14 touchdowns were the most by a wide margin as no other teammate had more than five.

Lamb is the best overall receiver in the draft, period. If he is not the first overall receiver taken, he likely will not be worse than the second. That should allow him to be drafted within the first 12 picks.

Best Bet: Take CeeDee Lamb’s Draft Position UNDER 12.5
