When it comes to the offensive linemen in the 2020 NFL Draft, there has been a lot of shifting around in the last year. Originally, Georgia’s Andrew Thomas was supposed to be the shoo-in to be the top offensive lineman off the board. Now it looks like it’ll be Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, who graded out extremely well at the NFL Combine and displayed the technique which impressed scouts and coaches. Where will he go in the draft? Let’s take a look at two different scenarios for him.

2020 NFL Draft: Tristan Wirfs Draft Position

Scenario No. 1: Top Eight

If Wirfs does go in the top eight, one choice clearly stands out above all the others, though it isn’t a total lock that he will go there. With Cincinnati taking Joe Burrow and Washington taking Chase Young, Wirfs will certainly be on the board at No. 3. However, the Detroit Lions – who pick third – need help on defense more than offense. They have a huge need in their secondary which will probably take a higher priority for them. Yes, giving Matthew Stafford a massive lineman is something Detroit needs, especially since Stafford suffered a significant injury last season. However, the secondary is even more of a mess, so the Lions are probably going to pick a defensive player. That leaves the New York Giants at pick No. 4.

The Giants need to give quarterback Daniel Jones some security. It is important for the Giants to pick an elite lineman not just to give Jones protection, but to make the statement to Jones in the draft that they really care about his well-being and success. Players need to know their organization is truly looking out for them; sending the message to Jones is as important as giving him a vital piece to work with. The psychology is as essential as the Xs and Os. Wirfs should go to New York.

If by chance the Giants don’t take him, this will get interesting. Miami seems to love Tua Tagovailoa at No. 5. The Los Angeles Chargers could take Wirfs at No. 6 to help quarterback Tyrod Taylor, but they do need a quarterback of the future and might try to grab a quarterback at that spot. Carolina at No. 7 might be inclined to go for defense or a wide receiver. If Wirfs doesn’t go to the Giants with the fourth pick, the next best spot in the top eight is the Arizona Cardinals at No. 8. Kyler Murray definitely needs an upgrade of his offensive line.

Scenario No. 2: Wirfs Falls To No. 9 Or Later

The possibility that the Giants will snub Wirfs is real. After all, the Giants stunned everyone with their Daniel Jones pick last year and the rumor this year is that they love Isaiah Simmons. However, the Cardinals should be there to scoop up Wirfs at No. 8.

Let’s assume Wirfs somehow falls out of the top eight, though. Jacksonville at No. 9 and the New York Jets at No. 11 both have young quarterbacks who need help. Wirfs would fit very well on either one of those two teams. Expecting a fall below 11 just isn’t realistic with Wirfs. If he’s not a top-eight pick, he will certainly be off the board by No. 11 at the absolute latest. Expect him to be picked in the top 10, one way or another.

Bet On the Under

I really don’t see Wirfs falling past the Cardinals at No. 8. They are going all-in on the offense and they can’t allow Murray to get banged around – especially given how much they want to pass. I would bet under as Wirfs should be gone before the ninth pick in the draft.
