The Borgata-powered playMGM online sportsbook marks the official completion of the company’s betting triumvirate in the state of New Jersey, along with its companion casino and online poker offerings. And while the competition for sports betting dollars within the state is fierce, the MGM and Borgata brand carry with them an irresistible cachet that bettors loyal to the company happily honor.
As for the online sportsbook offering, playMGM certainly belongs in the space – but it has plenty of work to do if it hopes to compete with new arrivals DraftKings and FanDuel. That said, New Jersey online sports betting is still in its infancy – and with Borgata one of the most well-respected names in sports betting, you can be certain that playMGM will make up ground in this regard.

PlayMGM Sportsbook History
Borgata Hotel and Casino began operations in 2003, and quickly expanded to the point where a second tower hotel was built just five years later. MGM Mirage was part of a joint venture that resulted in the construction of the casino. It was forced to shop its 50 percent ownership in Borgata in 2010 when MGM Macau part-owner Pansy Ho was banned from all gaming operations within the state of New Jersey.
Four years later, MGM was allowed back into the state’s gaming industry, and took over sole operation of the property in 2016. playMGM was one of the first online sportsbooks in operation within the state, and Borgata hopes that the opening of its Moneyline Bar and Book at the end of June will spur interest not only in the on-site sportsbook, but in the mobile offering, as well.
First Deposit Bonus
playMGM offers quite a user-friendly bonus. After players sign up, they’re instructed to make their initial deposit. PlayMGM then offers the player a free wager in the amount they’ve deposited, from $25 all the way to $100. If the player makes an unsuccessful first bet, he or she will be refunded the total amount of that wager up to a maximum of $100.
The conditions for this bonus are simple: The player can only recoup losses on his or her first bet made on playMGM, and that bet must be made within seven days of creating his or her account, at a minimum bet of $25. But here’s the best part: The money is deposited as cash within three days of the bet being settled. Players are also treated to a $25 bonus to spend on the playMGM casino app.
Players can sign up on either their iOS or Android devices, and the process is quite simple. Users are asked to provide their name, date of birth and social security number – none of which can be edited after initial sign-up – along with a variety of other personal information, including address and phone number. Players are also prompted to create a unique username and password.
From there, players are taken to an area where they can make their initial deposit. It would be nice for bettors to at least have the option to explore the app before committing to that first deposit, but that’s now how playMGM has laid things out. That said, players do have the option of declining to make a deposit in that moment and putting money into their account at a later time or date instead.
PlayMGM Sportsbook Interface
playMGM’s mobile and web interfaces are not exactly eye-catching – in fact, this might be one of the most notable disappointments about the sportsbook. While the top-bar sport-by-sport menu is simple and easy to navigate, there’s not much going for the rest of the interface, which is plain to a fault and doesn’t do much to entice prospective bettors to stick around.
Functionality issues have also plagued the online sportsbook, with users complaining about frequent lock-ups and crashes. Borgata certainly has the time and resources to make significant improvements to the app – both in appearance and functionality – but for the time being, players could hardly be blamed for wanting more out of their mobile sportsbook than what playMGM is presently offering.
Deposit and Withdrawal Options
PlayMGM offers a multitude of ways in which players can deposit funds into their account:
Automated Clearing House or e-check: You can use an ACH or e-check by simply providing a bank routing number and account number. You can also opt for an online bank transfer by using the same information; banks offering this service include Bank of America, BB&T, Capital One 360, Chase, Citi Bank, HSBC Bank USA, New York Community Bank, Regions, Santander Bank, SunTrust, TD Bank, US Bank and Wells Fargo.
Credit Card: While this might be one of the easiest ways to fund your account, some credit card companies consider a deposit with them to be the same as requesting a cash advance, and will charge users fees. Others prohibit online gaming transactions altogether. So do your homework here before opting to use your credit card.
“PayNearMe”: You can obtain a barcode on the playMGM app or website that will enable you to fund your account by scanning that code at a participating CVS, 7-11 or Family Dollar store. Funds are generally available within 20 minutes of the deposit.
Neteller: This e-wallet service allows users to fund their playMGM account via a bank account.
Players can also fund their account directly at the Borgata sportsbook cage, though they’ll need to have created an account before doing so.
You can withdraw your money in a variety of ways, as well:
Automated Clearing House or e-check: You can request an ACH or e-check by providing the same bank routing number and account number you used to fund the account. Your funds should appear 3-5 business days after the transaction is cleared.
Neteller: Funds are transferred through the e-wallet and directly into your bank account.
Check: You can have playMGM send you a check in the mail; expect it to take up to a week to arrive.
Borgata Cage: You can request that your funds be withdrawn right from the brick-and-mortar sportsbook; simply bring a piece of photo identification to the Borgata cage, and you’ll be given your cash.
If you’re a fan of predominantly betting the four major professional sports along with NCAA football and basketball, the playMGM app has just what you’re looking for. You’ll get plenty of MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL options along with a bevy of college options. As for secondary sports, there’s a bit of a shortage here, but there are still some popular events available:
- Motor Racing
- Soccer (including all major European domestic leagues and major tournaments)
While it doesn’t compete with some of the more robust sportsbook offerings in this regard, it does cover the basics, while offering enough sports with international flavor to keep casual players interested. That said, bettors cannot place a wager on any team competing in an event within the state of New Jersey, or any team based in New Jersey no matter where that team is playing.
This is another area where playMGM lags behind the competition. There is a serious lack of promotions offered on the app, aside from a handful of “boosted bets” in which playMGM offers enhanced odds for select games or situations. And even these boosts are modest compared to other online sportsbooks, which will occasionally offer greatly enhanced odds for underdog or longshot plays.
PlayMGM offers every notable bet type available: Moneyline, Totals (Over/Under), Spread, Prop, Teaser, Parlay (up to a max of 10 games) and Futures wagers. And while playMGM doesn’t have the most robust live bet offering, it does provide one of the most comprehensive list of prop bets of any online sportsbook operating in the state of New Jersey.
The playMGM Sportsbook welcomes customers to reach out in a variety of ways, and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Players can either fill out a request form that is eventually responded to by a member of the customer service team, or they can reach out via telephone (1-609-248-9531) or email (email@example.com).
