2022 British Open: Round 1 Head-to-Head Odds & Picks

Our fourth and final Major of the 2022 season is upon us as The Open Championship will get underway on Thursday, July 14. This year, The Open Championship returns to the Old Course at St Andrews for the first time since 2015.

Below, I will give out my two best head-to-head bets for the first round of the 2022 Open Championship.

Rd 1: Keegan Bradley Over Sebastian Munoz & Sahith Theegala (+140)

There are multiple factors to help narrow down our best bets for this tournament. Among the most important include iron play, major championship experience, and recent form.

At the Old Course, iron play is by far the most crucial element for success as the historic links course favors those who can put themselves on the greens in regulation and avoid hazards. The best iron players will have a significant advantage over the rest of the field as the wind is expected to be howling this week at St Andrews, which will be further amplified at this links course.

Enter Keegan Bradley. Perhaps one of the most underrated iron players on TOUR, Bradley is one of my longshot bets to win the whole tournament. This season, Bradley ranks 18th on TOUR in SG Tee to Green and 19th in SG Approach the Green.

Bradley is not a “one-trick pony” either, as he ranks 27th in SG Off the Tee and 15th in Total Strokes Gained. Meanwhile, Munoz ranks just 42nd in SG Tee to Green and 58th in SG Approach the Green while Theegala ranks just 48th and 71st respectively in those two categories.

Another advantage Bradley possesses over each of these two golfers is major championship experience and success. Over his last four Major appearances, Bradley has made the cut three times and has posted two top-20 finishes.

This season, Bradley has made the cut in both of his Major Championship appearances as he finished T48 at the PGA Championship and T7 at the U.S. Open. In terms of The Open Championship specifically, Bradley has made the cut in five of his eight career appearances, with three of those five made-cuts resulting in top-20 finishes.

On the other hand, Munoz has missed the cut in each of his two Open Championship appearances and has never finished inside the top-10 at a major. Theegala has only one major championship appearance, and he missed the cut.

Rd 1: Corey Conners Over Billy Horschel & Zach Johnson (+135)

The other guy we are backing in this first round is Corey Conners. On TOUR this season, Conners ranks 19th in SG Tee to Green and 30th in SG Approach the Green.

Meanwhile, Horschel ranks just 37th in SG Tee to Green and 125th in SG Approach the Green while Johnson ranks just 171st and 172nd respectively in those two categories. Another advantage Conners possesses over each of these two golfers is recent major championship success.

Conners has made the cut in four of his last seven major championships, with all four of those made-cuts resulting in top-15 finishes. His most recent high-placed major finish was at this year’s Masters Tournament, where Conners finished T6.

At last year’s Open Championship, Conners finished T15. On the other hand, Horschel has failed to finish inside the top-20 in 20 straight majors.

The Open Championship has been particularly difficult for Horschel as he has missed the cut in three of his last four appearances, with the one made-cut resulting in a T53 finish. Johnson has also struggled in major championships recently as he has missed the cut in five of his last eight appearances.

At The Open Championship, Johnson failed to make the cut in his last appearance.

Best of luck!
