British Open 2022: Best Head-to-Head Odds & Picks

The 150th British Open at the Old Course at St. Andrews will tee off early Thursday for what should be an incredible few days of action. With many in the field already there for the Scottish Open last week, the field is as top-heavy as I can ever remember with a few playing the best golf of their careers.

Let’s take a closer look at two matchups I’m keyed in on for the 2022 Open Championship.

Cameron Smith (+105 on DraftKings Sportsbook) vs. Shane Lowry

Smith got over his missed cut at the US Open with a T10 last week at the Scottish Open, as the Australian now enters the prime of his career and is seemingly always now around come Sundays at majors. This season, Smith finished T3 (Masters) and T13 (PGA), and won THE Players and Sentry to start the calendar year.

Coming into the week, Smith is top 10 in the world in SG: Approach, SG: Total, and Birdie Average, and has all the tools to compete in the St. Andrews links-style format.

The last time we saw Lowry on a course in a PGA event, he missed the cut at the US Open in June after consecutive days of shooting 72. While a 2019 Open Championship win will always have his name in the conversation, I think he’s mispriced here against a golfer in Smith who has turned in one elite performance after another.

Dustin Johnson (-140 on DraftKings Sportsbook) vs. Tyrrell Hatton
Despite dropping to #18 in the world this week in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) from a lack of action on the PGA Tour since joining LIV, DJ is still one of the best golfers on the planet. The last time we saw him at an Open Championship (last year), DJ finished T8 and was in the thick of things heading into the weekend. It was his first top 25 in a span of going three of four in top 25s at majors in the time since.

The last time we saw him here at St. Andrews, which was prior to reaching the pinnacle of his career, DJ led the field through 36 holes before dropping a few key shots heading into Sunday. With his move over to LIV hurting him in the odds market, I think we’re getting some value here against a golfer in Hatton who is outside the top 100 in the world in SG: Off-the-Tee, SG: Approach, and Driving Accuracy %.

While he had some success in 2019, he missed the cut at The Open last season and finished T51 in 2018. It’s also worth noting he missed the cut here at St. Andrews in 2015.
