British Open 2022: Cameron Smith Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

Our fourth and final Major of the 2022 season is upon us as The Open Championship will get underway on Thursday, July 14. This year, The Open Championship returns to the Old Course at St Andrews for the first time since 2015.

Below, we will dissect the profile of Cameron Smith and give out a prediction for how he will fare this week.

Cameron Smith Stats to Know

  • Best Odds to Win: +2500 (via FanDuel)
  • World Ranking: 6
  • Best Open Championship Finish: T20 (2019)
  • Last Four Open Championship Finishes: T33, T20, 78, Cut
  • Last Four Tournament Finishes: T10, Cut, T48, T13

Cameron Smith Open Championship History

This week will be Smith’s fifth Open Championship appearance and first time playing the Old Course at St Andrews. The Open Championship has not been a place where Cameron Smith has found much success, as his highest finish was T20 in 2019.

Smith failed to crack the top 30 in all three of his other attempts and even missed the cut in his first outing back in 2017. Last year, Smith finished T33 after a poor Sunday.

Cameron Smith Recent Form

Smith enters this week in good form as he has made the cut in three of his last four tournaments with two top-15 finishes during that span. Last weekend, Smith finished T10 at the Genesis Scottish Open.

Outside of his 75 on Friday, Smith was near the top of the leaderboard in each round he played. Over his last 12 tournaments, Smith has two victories (17%), six top-15 finishes (50%) and three missed cuts (25%).

Cameron Smith Open Championship Predictions

Smith continues to cement himself as one of the world’s best golfers, and the Australian native should find some more success this week. The only reservation I have about Smith is that he has never played at St Andrews. However, that fact rings true for a good portion of this field.

Iron play will be essential at the Old Course, and Smith ranks 27th on TOUR in SG Tee to Green and fifth in SG Approach the Green. Smith missed the cut in his last Major at the U.S. Open. However, he finished T13 at the PGA Championship and T3 at the Masters Tournament.

When Smith’s game is on, he usually finds himself towards the top of the leaderboard. When his game is off, he misses cuts. Based on all the factors above, I think we get one of Smith’s good performances this week and a top-20 finish.
