British Open 2022: Collin Morikawa Betting Odds, Preview, & Prediction

The British Open returns to the Old Course at St. Andrews for the first time since 2015, when Zach Johnson hoisted the Claret Jug after a four-hole playoff against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman. What better place for the 150th Open Championship than the cradle of golf?

This is the final major of the year, and it’s not hyperbole to say that it could be one of the most consequential majors in history. The professional golf world has been riven by the formation of the controversial new LIV Tour, which has lured some top players away from the PGA Tour with lavish appearance fees. With members of the two tours exchanging verbal barbs through the media, a major involving players from both tours has an extra layer of drama.

This could also be the final time that Tiger Woods plays in a British Open at St. Andrews. Two of his three British Open wins have come at the Old Course, in 2000 and 2005. Can Tiger contend here again at age 46?

The course itself will play a starring role, too. The Road Hole, the Swilcan Burn, Principal’s Nose, the Coffin bunkers, the Hell bunker, the double greens – these iconic features will provide a marvelous stage for the world’s best players. Mother Nature is sure to be a factor as well. The Old Course can be a pushover if the wind doesn’t blow, but it can be a hellscape is the weather is truly Scottish, with plenty of wind and perhaps some rain.

How can we expect the favorites to fare at St. Andrews? Read on …

Collin Morikawa British Open History

Morikawa has one of the best records in British Open history, entering this year’s tournament an undefeated 1-0. His debut in this tournament last year was nothing short of remarkable, with all four days at 68 or under, including a Sunday 64 to seal the deal. The question now remains can he handle St. Andrews this year like he did Royal St. George’s last?

Collin Morikawa’s Recent Form

Looking back over the course of the season, Morikawa has prioritized the majors with only 14 events played thus far. The last time we saw him tee it up was the US Open (T5), preceded by a missed cut at The Memorial after a 77 on Friday.

Collin Morikawa British Open Predictions

Following a 2020-21 season where he finished 26th in FedEx Cup points while earning a personal-best $7 million (and won the British), Morikawa cemented himself as an elite-level golfer that has to be taken seriously at every major tournament. He has furthered that reputation, turning in top-five appearances at both the Masters and US Open, and starting the season with five consecutive tournaments finishing T7 or better.

While St. Andrews will no doubt prove to be more difficult than Royal St. George’s last season, I do think Morikawa has all the tools in his arsenal to perform here well again. Though his form might not be up to another outright win, I do like him to finish inside the top 20 at anything less than -200.
