British Open 2022: Justin Rose Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

The British Open returns to the Old Course at St. Andrews for the first time since 2015, when Zach Johnson hoisted the Claret Jug after a four-hole playoff against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman. What better place for the 150th Open Championship than the cradle of golf?

This is the year’s final major, and it’s not hyperbole to say that it could be one of the most consequential majors in history. The professional golf world has been riven by the formation of the controversial new LIV Tour, which has lured some top players away from the PGA Tour with lavish appearance fees. With members of the two tours exchanging verbal barbs through the media, a major involving players from both tours has an extra layer of drama.

This could also be the final time that Tiger Woods plays in a British Open at St. Andrews. Two of his three British Open wins have come at the Old Course in 2000 and 2005. Can Tiger contend here again at age 46?

The course itself will play a starring role, too. The Road Hole, the Swilcan Burn, Principal’s Nose, the Coffin bunkers, the Hell bunker, the double greens – these iconic features will provide a marvelous stage for the world’s best players. Mother Nature is sure to be a factor as well. The Old Course can be a pushover if the wind doesn’t blow, but it can be a hellscape if the weather is truly Scottish, with plenty of wind and perhaps some rain.

How can we expect the favorites to fare at St. Andrews? Read on …

Justin Rose British Open History

Rose finished runner-up to Francesco Molinari in 2018 at Carnoustie GC. Overall, Rose has excellent form historically at the British Open. He ranks sixth in total strokes gained in the field this week at the British Open. Rose finished in a tie for sixth place the last time the British Open was played at the Old Course in 2015. He gained 8.7 strokes total that week, which includes over a stroke to the field in each of his four rounds. While Rose was the fifth-ranked golfer in the world in 2015, it is clear he performs well on links-style golf courses.

Justin Rose’s Recent Form

Rose has two top-15 results in his last five tournaments. The highlight came at the RBC Canadian Open three starts ago, where he gained 15.1 strokes to the field. This includes a final round 60, which saw him card three eagles. Rose seems to be playing much better golf as of late. Specifically, his irons and putter have been in good form. Rose gained 1.8, 3.4, and 5.2 strokes on approach at the U.S. Open, RBC Canadian Open, and PGA Championship, respectively.

Justin Rose British Open Prediction

While Rose dropped out of contention with a Saturday round of 78 at the Scottish Open this past week, he made the weekend and has shown he enjoys links golf. He has made his last seven cuts at the British Open, and I expect that to continue this week at St. Andrews. That said, it has been an inconsistent overall year for Rose, and I would not anticipate seeing him towards the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.
