British Open 2022: Matt Fitzpatrick Betting Odds, Preview, & Prediction

The British Open returns to the Old Course at St. Andrews for the first time since 2015, when Zach Johnson hoisted the Claret Jug after a four-hole playoff against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman. What better place for the 150th Open Championship than the cradle of golf?

This is the final major of the year, and it’s not hyperbole to say that it could be one of the most consequential majors in history. The professional golf world has been riven by the formation of the controversial new LIV Tour, which has lured some top players away from the PGA Tour with lavish appearance fees. With members of the two tours exchanging verbal barbs through the media, a major involving players from both tours has an extra layer of drama.

This could also be the final time that Tiger Woods plays in a British Open at St. Andrews. Two of his three British Open wins have come at the Old Course, in 2000 and 2005. Can Tiger contend here again at age 46?

The course itself will play a starring role, too. The Road Hole, the Swilcan Burn, Principal’s Nose, the Coffin bunkers, the Hell bunker, the double greens – these iconic features will provide a marvelous stage for the world’s best players. Mother Nature is sure to be a factor as well. The Old Course can be a pushover if the wind doesn’t blow, but it can be a hellscape is the weather is truly Scottish, with plenty of wind and perhaps some rain.

How can we expect the favorites to fare at St. Andrews? Read on …

Matt Fitzpatrick British Open History

While his history in the British Open is not extensive, it is respectable. He has made the cut in four of the six British Opens that he has played in. Interestingly, in his first round in all six outings, he has always been competitive, and the second round was the decider if he was to advance on. You can tell in all facets that 2019 was the start of Fitzpatrick deserving some respect among the top golfers in the world, and in the British Open there was no exception. He has scored 69 in both second rounds since then, proving he has shaped his focus around being confident in his ability.

Matt Fitzpatrick’s Recent Form

I think it is fair to say that Matt Fitzpatrick is in elite form right now and to have sustained success for this period of time shows that he has found it. He is coming off a win at the US Open and has three other Top-10 finishes in his last five tournaments. Two other Top-10 finishes came within the Top-5, with a T2 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship and a T5 finish at the PGA Championship.

Matt Fitzpatrick British Open Prediction

It is hard to picture Matt Fitzpatrick outside of the Top-20 at this British Open with his recent form, but I expect the odds to be reasonable for this because of his history and the single cut in his last five. Look for Fitzpatrick to hold a ton of value in both the straight-up and the exotic markets, with his monster 2022 continuing through Britain.
