What are Team Futures?

Futures refers to any team-based wager for a future event or a result. These bets often do not pay out until weeks or even months from when they are initially placed. Bets for win totals and the Super Bowl winner are good examples of team futures bets.

Denver Broncos Super Bowl Odds

The acquisition of Russell Wilson should change everything for the Denver Broncos, who have been looking for a steady presence at the quarterback position since Peyton Manning retired. But which Russell Wilson is the Denver Broncos getting?

In October, on CBS’ The Pick Six Podcast, former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn spoke with CBS Sports senior writer Will Brinson about his experience with the same finger injury that Wilson suffered last year:

Looking at Wilson’s stats from last year, some concerning trends exist. Wilson has a career completion percentage of 65%. Per ESPN, in the four games before Wilson’s injury completion percentage ranged between 69.6% and 78.3%. When he was injured in Week 5, he left the game with a 68.8% completion percentage. Wilson returned in Week 10, and over the remaining nine games, Wilson only completed over 65% of his passes twice and only eclipsed 250 yards passing once after having done it three out of four games before the injury.

Before making a Super Bowl winner bet on the Denver Broncos, I need to see what Wilson and his finger look like, so this bet is a no for me.

Denver Broncos Conference Winner Odds

If Wilson is healthy, the Broncos have upgraded their team more than anyone else in a loaded AFC. An already talented roster that has felt like it is a quarterback away for multiple years may have finally gotten their quarterback.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, they are in a conference with Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert. Adding Wilson now puts them in the fight for the conference championship but with so many other top NFL quarterbacks in the AFC, adding Wilson may be more of a diluted addition than if he had gone to an NFC team.

The AFC Champion winner bet is a stay away for me until I see if Wilson is healthy. If Wilson comes out over the first few weeks and has a high completion rating, I can get behind some more Broncos futures.

Denver Broncos Division Winner Odds

Similar to how loaded the AFC is, the AFC West itself has Mahomes, Herbert and Derek Carr manning the quarterback positions for their respective teams in the most profound division in the league at the quarterback position.

At consensus +260 to win the division, I am staying away from the Denver Broncos.

Denver Broncos Win Totals Over/Under Odds

The Over (-120) of win total of 10 for the Broncos is a bet for me. I do have concerns about Wilson’s health and his ability to compete against the high-end teams in the AFC. However, the Broncos get to play a last-place schedule this year with games against the Jets, Panthers and Ravens.

I feel comfortable saying they can go 2-1 in these games.

Then the Broncos play the AFC South, where I expect them to win against Jacksonville and Houston and believe they can split between Indianapolis and Tennessee, resulting in 3-1 against the AFC South.

The Broncos face off against the NFC West, including Wilson returning to Seattle to battle Drew Lock or Geno Smith. The Broncos will face the Cardinals on Dec. 18, where Kliff Kingsbury has a track record of struggling late in the season. They get to face a rookie Trey Lance in September while he is still learning how to be an NFL quarterback and then will play the defending champion Rams on Christmas day. I could easily see the Broncos going 3-1 against the NFC West.

If we tally up these records, the Broncos would be 8-3 outside their division. For the Broncos to hit their over on the win total, they would only need to split within their division and take the home games going 3-3 to finish with an 11-6 record.

The Broncos over 10.5 wins (-120) is a bet I like.

Denver Broncos to Make the Playoffs Odds

For this exercise, if we assume the Chiefs, Ravens, Colts and Bills win their respective divisions, we assume the Steelers, Browns, Jets, Texans and Jaguars are not in the wildcard race. We would be left with three spots for the; Chargers, Broncos, Raiders, Bengals, Titans, Patriots and Dolphins.

The odds for the Broncos to make the playoffs is -139. At -139, for the Broncos to be a top three out of those seven teams feels like a good bet.

The Chargers and Raiders face a similar schedule to the Broncos, just without the last-place matchups. The Bengals are at risk of a Super Bowl hangover. The Titans have had a contentious offseason swapping A.J. Brown and Julio Jones for Robert Woods and Treylon Burks. The Patriots and Dolphins need Mac Jones and Tua Tagovailoa to take a step forward.

There are a lot of possible outcomes, and the Broncos making the playoffs seems like a good possibility. This is a good bet.

Favorite Denver Broncos Futures Bet

Broncos to make the playoffs (-139)

My favorite bet is for the Broncos to make the playoffs at -139. There is a lot of potential for the Broncos and better odds in the other bets, but until I see Wilson healthy, I can’t get behind laying down bets on Super Bowl, Conference or Division winners.

Denver’s new head coach was the offensive coordinator in Jacksonville the year Blake Bortles almost went to the Super Bowl. Even if Wilson is only 80%, I trust Nathanial Hackett to be able to get the Broncos to the playoffs at least.
