Green Bay Packers at Los Angeles Chargers Odds & Game Pick

The Green Bay Packers are rolling with four straight wins to improve to 7-1 at the midway mark of their season. All things considered, there is a very good chance they improve on that mark this week when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. The Chargers are coming off of their first win since Week 4 and it was only because the Chicago Bears missed a game-winning 41-yard field goal last week. It feels like this could be a sleepy spot for the Packers, fresh off a big win in primetime. Can they stay focused and get the win?

Overview

Aaron Rodgers will be looking to produce his third straight game with at least 300 passing yards and three touchdowns this week. Rodgers, who has performed at an MVP level in back-to-back wins, has looked more and more comfortable in Matt LaFleur’s offense with each passing game. Early in the season, it seemed like the wide receiving corps was an excuse for the team’s struggles. Nowadays, nobody even mentions that Davante Adams – the team’s top receiver – has missed the last few weeks of action. It certainly helps that running back Aaron Jones had a career-high 226 scrimmage yards and two touchdown receptions in last week’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Green Bay is up to 26.9 points per game this season, and that’s plenty for a much-improved Packers’ defense. They’ve held opponents to just 20.4 points per game so far. As long as Rodgers continues to perform at an MVP level, it will take all of the pressure off of the Green Bay defense and allow them to do what they do best, which is to defend the pass.

As for the Chargers, they have really struggled for wins this season. They probably should have lost last week, and if you remove their lucky overtime win in Week 1, we’re basically looking at a one-win team, and that win has come against the winless Miami Dolphins. Philip Rivers has thrown 12 touchdown passes compared to seven interceptions behind an injury-riddled offensive line. He’s not getting much help from anyone as running back Melvin Gordon is averaging just 2.5 yards per carry this season. The Chargers are going to have to rely on their defense to keep this a grind as they’re not equipped to deal with a shootout.

Trends

  • The Packers have won seven straight against AFC teams, posting a 6-1 record against the spread in those contests
  • Green Bay is 3-0 both SU and ATS on the road this season.
  • The Chargers are 6-17-1 against the spread in their past 24 home games
  • Los Angeles is also 2-7 both straight up and ATS in its last nine games as a home underdog

Overview

After earning a big win at the Kansas City Chiefs in primetime, I can see the Packers coming out and being a bit sluggish here. However, by the second half, they should be in control of this contest.

The Chargers have been scrappy this season as most of their games have gone down to the wire. At the same time, they’re so banged up across the roster that they’re hard to trust. If this was a bigger line, I’d probably take the dog, but at about a field goal, I expect the Packers to win and cover.

Prediction: Green Bay 24, Los Angeles 17
