Wednesday’s Best MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Picks
(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
Pittsburgh Pirates (+220) at New York Mets (-270)
Starting Pitchers: Bailey Falter vs. Clay Holmes
The Mets will aim to complete a sweep on Wednesday after earning a pair of one-run wins over the Pirates to begin this series. New York’s Clay Holmes (5-1, 2.74 ERA) draws the start opposite Pittsburgh’s Bailey Falter (2-3, 4.36 ERA). The first inning has ended with zeroes on the scoreboard in nine of the previous 10 meetings between these franchises. There’s a lot to like about the odds of that trend continuing.
Holmes has been stellar in this betting market, firing a scoreless opening frame in six of his eight starts. Take note that the 32-year-old is limiting hitters leading off an inning to a .200/.273/.375 slash line in 44 plate appearances. It doesn’t take him much time to build momentum on the mound. This is a great spot to back Holmes, considering the Pirates rank 25th in first-inning runs per contest and 29th in OPS (.625).
Meanwhile, Falter has mirrored Holmes’ mark by escaping the first inning unscathed in six of his eight outings. The crafty lefty has some crucial experience battling the Mets’ superstars. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Juan Soto have combined for one extra-base knock versus Falter across 27 at-bats. An NRFI wager has cashed in seven of Pittsburgh’s past 10 games. Don’t hesitate to lock this one in.
Pick: NRFI (-113)
Kansas City Royals (+112) at Houston Astros (-132)
Starting Pitchers: Michael Lorenzen vs. Colton Gordon
An exciting rubber match is on tap for Wednesday after the Royals and Astros split their first two showdowns to kick off the week. Kansas City will hand the ball to Michael Lorenzen (3-3, 3.57 ERA), while Houston will give Colton Gordon a chance to shine in his MLB debut. There has been a clean first inning in 14 of the Royals’ 21 road contests and 15 of the Astros’ 23 home clashes this campaign. Talk about cash cows.
It can be risky to rely on a rookie hurler. However, Gordon benefits from an advantageous matchup at Daikin Park. Kansas City ranks 27th in chase percentage (29.6%) and 26th in OPS against left-handed pitching (.284). The Royals are the lone squad in the league with fewer than five home runs off southpaws. Painting the edges of the strike zone to induce soft contact should be Gordon’s key to success.
Lorenzen is one of just seven pitchers who have yet to surrender a first-inning run through at least eight starts. The veteran right-hander is utilizing a seven-pitch mix to confuse batters and now encounters a Houston lineup that grades last in first-inning runs per game (0.20). It’s worth mentioning that the Astros duo of Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena is also 1-for-13 combined facing Lorenzen. Trust him to gather three quick outs.
