Mobile Sports Betting Launches in Pennsylvania (PA)

Last month it was announced that mobile sports betting would be coming to Pennsylvania. Now the wait is over as mobile sports betting has been rolled out. Sugarhouse Sportsbook has begun live testing of online sports betting in Pennsylvania.

When it was announced that mobile sports betting would be coming to PA, it wasn’t made clear which sportsbook would take on the live testing. Sugarhouse is the initial sportsbook that will provide testing of the service via mobile devices (Android launched initially and iOS was pending approval as of this week).

Sports betting was already legal in PA, so what is the significance of mobile sports betting? Mobile sports betting is expected to take wagers generated to the next level. PA’s neighbor, New Jersey, currently reports more than 80% of its legal sports betting comes from a mobile device. Pennsylvania reported over $44 million in wagers in March 2019, but there is obvious room for growth given the nearly 10x that amount — close to $400 million — that New Jersey generated in March with the option of mobile sports betting. And that nearly $400 million generated came from nearly 3.5 million fewer residents than Pennsylvania.

Beyond Sugarhouse, mobile sports betting is expected to be rolled out at two other sportsbooks in PA, Parx SportsBook and River Sportsbook.

At some point, following the live testing phase, mobile betting will likely be released by Pennsylvania’s other sportsbooks over time. Here are the current locations available for in-person sports betting in Pennsylvania.

There are three additional sports books that are planned to open in Pennsylvania in the future. They include Mohegan Sun Pocono (Unibet), Mount Airy (BetStars), and Presque Isle Downs (CDI).
