New York Jets at Miami Dolphins Odds & Game Pick

In an AFC East divisional matchup, the division’s two bottom teams will face off Sunday. As one of two winless teams remaining in the NFL, the Miami Dolphins are nearly openly talking about tanking. They have looked better in recent games, but then they change their game plan and throw games away.

On the other side, Adam Gase is in his first year coaching the New York Jets after recently being the head coach in Miami. The Jets are not playing much better, and because of this, they were shopping some of their best players at the trade deadline behind their backs.

With feathers ruffled in locker rooms and two bad teams on the field Sunday, it should make for a very interesting game.

Overview

Offensively, the Jets are really struggling. They average just 240 total yards per game, and while they have been better with Sam Darnold back under center, they are still incredibly inconsistent. Last week, the offensive line got overwhelmed by Jacksonville, giving up a whopping eight sacks which forced Darnold into mistakes, with him throwing three interceptions. The Jets also totaled just 46 rushing yards, as the running game continues to struggle. A game against Miami could be what this team needs to get back on track, but they will also need to find success on the defensive side of the ball without star linebacker C.J. Mosley yet again.

Don’t look now, but the Dolphins are dangerously close to putting it together. They dominated the game against the Steelers early on last week, jumping out to a 14-point lead. Ryan Fitzpatrick has found success with these receivers, but as soon as things start looking good, it feels like they tell Fitzpatrick to start throwing up prayers. They even called the mysterious cover zero on third and very long at the end of the half last week, basically begging Mason Rudolph to make the game closer. It feels like this team will always find a way to lose, no matter the circumstances, which actually is impressive.

Trends

  • The Jets are averaging 11.1 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 31 in the NFL).
  • The Jets is surrendering 26.4 PPG this season (No. 25 in the NFL).
  • The total has hit the over in four of the Jets’ last six games on the road.
  • Miami is averaging 11.0 PPG this season (No. 32 in the NFL).
  • Miami is surrendering 34.0 PPG this season (No. 32 in the NFL).
  • The total has hit the under in five of Miami’s last six game.
  • The Jets lead the all-time series with the Dolphins, 54-52-1
  • Last Meeting: November 4, 2018 — The Dolphins defeated the Jets, 13-6, at Hard Rock Stadium.

Winning Margin (4-Way): New York Jets by 1-13 Pts (+150)
Despite playing poorly the past couple weeks, the Jets are still facing the Dolphins here. Miami put their best corner, Xavien Howard, on IR, so Sam Darnold should have an easy day passing the football and building his confidence. Defensively, Gregg Williams should have little trouble scheming blitzes that will confuse this offensive line. However, we have to note that the Dolphins’ offense has played a lot better and should be able to move the football early in this game. For that reason, it will not be a blowout. Miami has averaged 17 points over their past three games and should top that total against a Jets’ defense giving up 26.4, on average.

Bottom Line

To echo what was stated above, this is a get-right game for the Jets offensively. Sam Darnold should have no problem passing the ball and Le’Veon Bell should put together his best performance of the season with the Dolphins giving up 4.8 yards per carry (T-No. 5 in NFL). Even if Miami gets an early lead, they will probably roll with nine players on the field or something. Getting the loss is their priority, and losing to a team that could compete for the top-overall pick would be bad news, so have confidence that the Jets can clear this spread, but not enough confidence to blow them out.

Pick: New York Jets -3
