Sports Betting is Likely Coming to New Hampshire

New Hampshire is expected to be one of the next states to approve sports betting, both at retail locations and online via mobile sports betting. The state’s legislature is expected to pass the bill on Thursday. At that point, the bill will be sent to the governor’s office where Gov. Chris Sununu is expected to turn it into law by adding his signature.

Rep. Timothy Lang, the bill’s author, told Legal Sports Report that Thursday’s vote is expected to be a mere formality.

“It will be a pretty quick vote,” Lang said. “I anticipate it won’t be challenged by anybody.”

Once the bill is passed, it’s then expected to take three to four weeks to find its way to the governor’s desk. Sununu will then have 10 days to sign the bill and make it state law.

While this is certainly a win for the sports betting community, New Hampshire will put some limitations on sports betting, at least initially. To start, the state will cap mobile sports betting operators at five and retail operators at 10.

This decision was disappointing for the bill’s author, Lang, but he told Legal Sports Report that he would take the immediate win and attempt to make changes in the future once the bill is established as law.

“I’ll take the policy win,” Lang said. “Sports betting will now be legal in New Hampshire, and we can fine-tune it down the road.”

With the timing of the bill moving to the governor’s desk, sports betting should be legal in New Hampshire well ahead of the start of the 2019 NFL season.
