The Green Bay Packers are coming off their worst loss of the season and their first defeat since September 26. While they didn’t get the result they wanted in a 26-11 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers, several Packers players and coaches – including Aaron Rodgers – pointed to the loss as an important point in a season in which the team might have needed to be humbled. The question, now, is whether or not Green Bay can pick up where it left off the previous week. They’ll face a stiff test from the visiting Carolina Panthers, who have now won five of their last six games.

Overview

Kyle Allen is now entrenched as the team’s starting quarterback following the news that Cam Newton will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury. Allen is coming off a decent bounce-back performance in last week’s 30-20 win over the Tennessee Titans. The backup-turned-starter threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Meanwhile, running back Christian McCaffrey had 166 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns in Week 9. With McCaffrey providing such an explosive option underneath, it opens up plenty of time and space for wide receivers D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel to get open for Allen down the field. The Panthers will look to exploit a run defense that has allowed just over 137 rushing yards per game since Week 2. With the possibility of snow and frigid temperatures, the running games could be a factor here.

As for the Packers, right now is all about figuring out a way to avoid an extended slide in the month of November. Green Bay is 1-5 straight up and against the spread in its last six November games dating back to the 2017 season. Aaron Rodgers and company were punched in the mouth in last week’s loss to the Chargers. Now they’ll face another rugged defense. The Panthers lead the NFL in sacks (34) and have the league’s ninth-ranked passing defense. Rodgers and company will have to find a way to run on this team to set up the pass and avoid losing the time of possession battle as they did last week.

Trends

  • Panthers are 4-1 SU and ATS in last 5 road games
  • Carolina has won last 2 head-to-head meetings
  • Panthers are 5-1 ATS in last 6 games overall
  • Green Bay is 1-5 SU and ATS in last 6 November home games
  • Total has gone over in last 5 head-to-head meetings

Bottom Line

There are obvious concerns about the Packers’ offensive line heading into a matchup with a defense that ranks near the top of the NFL in sacks and takeaways. At the same time, Green Bay could have a very difficult time trying to contain McCaffrey both as a runner and a pass-catcher. It feels like the Panthers keep this close, but the Packers find a way to win this – especially with the frigid temperatures at Lambeau Field.

Prediction: Green Bay 28, Carolina 27
