How to Bet UFC Over/Unders

In most sports, an over/under generally represents a total number of points a team earns from playing the game, and the game is decided by that score at the end. Once again, the UFC is very different from the other sports in this.

While the fighters are graded in points at the end of each round, these points are not incorporated in betting. They are only to have a grading system that looks at each round as its own entity. Then, the fighter who wins the most rounds is determined to be the winner if the fight makes it five full rounds.

However, if there is a stoppage at any point and a fighter is determined unable to continue or taps out, the win is awarded to their opponent. So how does any of this help you? We learned what the over/under is NOT, so what is it?

UFC Over/Under 101

The over/under in UFC wagering is a total number of rounds that the oddsmakers project the fight to go, and the lines dictate which they think to be the least and most likely.

For example:  Say two fighters are squaring off, and the line is set at 3.5 with the Over at -125 and the Under at +100. This means that they think the fight will, at absolute minimum, complete three rounds and make it halfway through the fourth round. When the clock hits 2:29 remaining in that fourth round, the over bets officially cashes, and if it never makes it there, then the under cashes.

These are good bets for knowing who has stronger chins, as opposed to not, and who is more aggressive vs. tactical. The UFC is an untapped market to most, but it is a lot of fun when you start to understand it!

They have lines for the fight to “go the distance,” which are generally good bets in big fights. Yet, all that means is that the fight has to make it to the final bell, and you hit your bet; otherwise, you don’t. Anytime the clock is running, the over/under people are sweating profusely and just wanting it to end or for people to get up.

The emotion that goes along with it is wild. While all bets should be researched and calculated, making sure you know what you are betting on is especially true with these over/unders. I have heard people say that they thought it was halfway through the third round and that the 3.5 line was confusing. So please be careful.
