The public cashed in big time yesterday with their MLB no runs first inning (NRFI) picks, as the top three MLB yes runs first inning (YRFI) picks in terms of money wagered went 3-0, while the most popular NRFI bets went 2-1.

Last week’s 2-1 showing makes it four out of the last five weeks being profitable in our NRFI columns. I’m back to dive into some games on today’s slate for our top MLB no runs first inning (NRFI) picks.

San Diego Padres vs. Baltimore Orioles

Starting Pitchers: Walker Buehler vs. Trevor Rogers

I love the chances the top of the Orioles lineup gives it of scoring early. No player among today's 15-game slate has more career home runs against their opposing pitcher than Pete Alonso does against Walker Buehler. Alonso's all-or-nothing approach is epitomized in his head-to-head matchups with Buehler, as he has five hits in 17 at-bats, with four of them being home runs.

Entering this series, Alonso had belted seven home runs and driven in 18 runs over his previous 21 games. Both of those were tied for the second-most in the American League over that span (since May 20th). And Gunnar Henderson just became the fourth-youngest player to reach 100 career home runs with the Orioles.

On the other side, Trevor Rogers pitched to a miserable 10.31 ERA in four May starts. The team is also 1-8 the last nine times he has toed the rubber. Rogers has an ERA of 5.73 or worse in each of the second through fifth innings, but it’s only a matter of time before his 2.25 first-inning ERA similarly regresses.

          Pick: YRFI (-140)

          Philadelphia Phillies vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Starting Pitchers: Cristopher Sanchez vs. Kyle Harrison

Cristopher Sanchez’s recent 50.2 scoreless innings streak was the fifth-longest by a pitcher since the mound moved to its current distance. Over the last seven starts, Sanchez has gone 6-0 with a 0.51 ERA over 53 innings pitched, a 63:5 K:BB ratio and a 0.72 WHIP. He turned in his fourth start with double-digit strikeouts, despite allowing his first home run since April 23rd.

Conversely, Kyle Harrison had allowed two runs or fewer in all of his 11 starts, which was tied for the second-longest streak for a starting pitcher in franchise history. I am giving him a pass for his last rough outing at what turned out to be MLB’s biggest bandbox in Las Vegas Ballpark, where he allowed a career-high seven earned runs, raising his season ERA from 1.57 to 2.56.

          Pick: NRFI (-170)

Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants

Starting Pitchers: Colin Rea vs. Logan Webb

Logan Webb only lasted 4.1 innings in his first start after a 24-day injured list (IL) stint. But since then, he has once again become a true innings eater.

Webb’s last two starts were his MLB-best 62nd and 63rd instances of seven-plus innings pitched since the start of 2021. In the three starts since returning from injury, he has pitched to a 0.93 ERA over 19.1 innings. Webb has also allowed a .138 opponents’ batting average and induced a 57.1% groundball rate, to go along with a 0.67 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB ratio.

Seemingly, the only thing that cut Webb's first start post-injury short was control issues, as he allowed three or more walks for the third time this season. But he has surrendered just one walk over his last 15 innings, suggesting that his shaky start against the Rockies could have had as much to do with the altitude at Coors Field as rustiness from a lack of repetitions.

Webb is in ace form again, as his last outing was his first start of eight-plus innings since May 2025.

          Pick: NRFI (-136)
