(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Houston Astros
The Houston Astros have won seven of their last 10 games. They are close to establishing themselves as a legitimate threat. However, they’ll face a tough challenge today.
Jacob Misiorowski (5-2 in 11 starts with a 1.83 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP) is one of the best pitchers in baseball. To make matters worse for Houston, he has been dominant on the road, posting a 1.66 ERA and holding opponents to a .123 batting average.
Houston will counter with Tatsuya Imai. His six starts have produced mixed results, as he owns a 2-2 record with a 6.17 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Opposing lineups have hit him hard several times, but he delivered his best outing of the season in his last start, firing six no-hit, scoreless innings against Texas.
Houston's lineup was busy on Saturday, and overall, it wasn't too bad over the last week (.247 batting average, 46 runs in seven games). However, they are unlikely to have nearly as much luck against Misiorowski. Milwaukee's lineup has not been great, but it will wake up against Imai.
Pick: Brewers -1.5 (-106)
Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals’ lineup hasn’t produced much this season, hitting just .238. But they catch a break today because the Cubs will start Jordan Wicks.
Chicago recently called Wicks up. His first start last week couldn’t have gone much worse. He allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings before manager Craig Counsell pulled him from the game.
Maybe those struggles came from first-start nerves, but Wicks wasn’t exactly dominating before his promotion. He posted a 4.44 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in the minors.
To be fair, the Cardinals haven’t swung the bats well lately, either. They have hit just .197 over the last week and scored only nine runs during that stretch. Expecting a sudden offensive breakout requires some faith, especially with questions surrounding the pitching matchup.
Still, Wicks got hit hard in his last outing, and I expect the Cardinals to do the same before the Cubs turn to their bullpen.
Pick: Cardinals First 5 Innings Moneyline (+130)
