Nick Pivetta 3+ Earn Runs Allowed (-105)
The Padres began the season as one of the best teams, but they have recently experienced a downturn. They’re coming in with a record of 10-12 in their last 22 games, and the offense has been dreadful, batting .217 (28th) with a .608 OPS (29th) in that span.
The pitching has been slightly better, with a 3.92 ERA (17th), and they will need to be at their best when facing the Dodgers. Nick Pivetta will get the start in the first game of the series, and he his having one of his best seasons with a 3.15 ERA. He's never finished with a sub-4.00 ERA in his previous nine seasons.
Pivetta is coming off a brutal start against the Giants, allowing five earned runs. We could see a similar struggle against the Dodgers, who have a lifetime .469 slugging and a .342 weighted on-base average against him.
Freddie Freeman 2+ Hits + Runs + RBI (-115)
We'll stick with this matchup because the defending champs are in a good position to repeat. It is a close race in the National League West, but so was last year, and Los Angeles was able to win that division. They could establish some breathing room with a winning series in San Diego.
As long as the lineup plays up to par, they can do it, especially since they are second in runs scored per game (5.56). Especially Freddie Freeman, whose .345 average and 1.000 OPS are third in the league. He's been consistent all season. You can take any stretch of games, and he'll have some of the best numbers in the league. Over his last 12 games, Freeman is batting .362. Against Pivetta, he's 12-for-36 in his career.
Luis L. Ortiz 7+ Strikeouts (+130)
It might be tough for the Guardians to defend their American League Central crown. Currently, they are third in the division and 7.5 games back of the Tigers, who are continuing their momentum from the second half of last season. As long as they continue to play the way they are, Cleveland will at least compete for a Wild Card spot.
Cleveland hosts their in-state rivals from Cincinnati. The Reds have been inconsistent this season and sit at 32-33. Their biggest problem is that their offense has a lot of potential, but they are inconsistent and strike out a lot.
Luis L. Ortiz has a solid 27.4% strikeout against this lineup and has logged at least six strikeouts in six starts this season. He could put up a big number against a lineup averaging 8.86 strikeouts per game (25th).
