After an exciting trade deadline, our power rankings have seen some major changes. For the first time all season we have a new number one team. A new team has entered our top five and a familiar name has dropped out of the top 10. As always, our power rankings are not meant to reflect only current records but rest of season outlook, team splits, and runs for and against.

| Team | Previous | Record | Last 10 | |
| 1. Houston Astros | 3 | 73-40 | 8-2 | The Houston Astros look like the best team in baseball after an exciting trade deadline that saw them bolster their pitching staff with Zack Greinke and Aaron Sanchez. Houston is currently second in the league in wins and third in winning percentage. |
| 2. Los Angeles Dodgers | 2 | 74-40 | 7-3 | The Dodgers continue to look like the favorites to make the World Series out of the NL. Their 39 wins against teams .500 or above ranks second in the league. However, the Dodgers have lost six of their nine interleague matchups this year. |
| 3. New York Yankees | 1 | 72-39 | 6-4 | The Yankees did not make any noise at the trade deadline and now find themselves passed by both the Astros and Dodgers in our power rankings. The Yankees are still a World Series contender but are 3-4 in their season series against a vastly improved Houston team. |
| 4. Cleveland Indians | 7 | 66-45 | 7-3 | Cleveland made some major waves at the trade deadline. They addressed their issues scoring runs in a big way by bringing in Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes. They continue to chase a hot Twins team in the AL Central but are all but guaranteed to take one of the wild-card spots if they fail to overtake their divisional rivals. |
| 5. Minnesota Twins | 4 | 69-42 | 8-2 | The Twins have pounded home runs at a historic rate. Third in the league in runs scored, the Twins have the third-best run differential in the league. They lead the league with 35 road wins. |
| 6. Tampa Bay Rays | 5 | 65-48 | 8-2 | Tied with the Twins with 35 road wins, the Rays will have to keep up the road warrior mentality to have success in the playoffs. The Rays are number two in team ERA. |
| 7. Washington Nationals | 10 | 58-53 | 3-7 | The Nationals continue to make a push in the National League. They are now in the wild-card mix and appear to be set to pass both the Cardinals and Phillies to lead the race. Atlanta has been hot and may be too far ahead to catch. However, the Nationals profile as the stronger team and could upset them with just under two months left to play. |
| 8. Atlanta Braves | 11 | 66-47 | 6-4 | After improving their bullpen at the trade deadline the Braves have thrown their hats in the ring as World Series contenders. They are one of only eight teams with a winning record both at home and on the road. |
| 9. Milwaukee Brewers | 8 | 57-56 | 4-6 | Milwaukee failed to make a big splash at the deadline, instead deciding to improve their pitching staff by making a series of moves to add depth. They are one of only nine teams without a losing record against teams at .500 or better. |
| 10. Oakland Athletics | 9 | 64-48 | 6-4 | The Athletics have reeled off wins in six of their last eight games. Oakland has one of the easier schedules in the league and thus figure to remain in the wild-card mix for the rest of the season. |
| 11. Boston Red Sox | 6 | 59-55 | 2-8 | Boston has lost eight straight games, all of them to their own division. Their playoff hopes are not dashed due to an easy remaining schedule. However, they are unlikely to make any noise even if they do find their way to the postseason. |
| 12. Philadelphia Phillies | 13 | 58-53 | 5-5 | Philadelphia has slipped to third place in the NL East. They remain in the wild-card mix and have the talent to make the postseason. However, they are five games under .500 against teams .500 or above. They must improve against the better teams in the league to have a shot at anything more than a fighting chance for a playoff spot. |
| 13. Chicago Cubs | 12 | 60-51 | 6-4 | The Chicago Cubs are one of only nine 60-win teams in the majors. However, they may not even be the best team in their own division. They have a solid 30-30 record against teams .500 above but have been a disaster on the road. |
| 14. St. Louis Cardinals | 15 | 58-52 | 5-5 | Winners of 14 of their 22 contests since the All-Star break, the Cardinals remain in the mix to win the NL Central. Owners of the third-lowest team ERA at home in the league, the Cardinals need to improve on the road to avoid being knocked out of the playoff hunt. |
| 15. Texas Rangers | 14 | 57-54 | 6-4 | The Rangers have played with some surprising offensive consistency after a roller coaster start to the season. Texas is fifth in the league in runs scored. Before winning their last four games the Rangers dropped 13 of their 18 contests since the All-Star break. |
| 16. San Francisco Giants | 18 | 56-56 | 4-6 | San Francisco is the surprise team of the season. Seen as one of the worst teams in the league just over a month ago, the Giants have turned their season around. They suddenly find themselves in the wild-card mix but have a tough schedule ahead. |
| 17. Arizona Diamondbacks | 15 | 56-56 | 5-5 | Arizona currently find themselves with a .500 record. They are one of only eight teams in the league with more than 30 wins on the road. The Diamondbacks will need to succeed on the road if they have any hope of thrusting themselves into the wild-card conversation. |
| 18. Los Angeles Angels | 17 | 56-57 | 2-8 | Losers of four straight and eight of their last 10, the Angels are seeing their playoff hopes evaporate. Despite some exciting individual talents, they are likely to have a losing record over the rest of their schedule. |
| 19. New York Mets | 21 | 55-56 | 9-1 | The Mets shocked the league by pivoting to being deadline buyers. They have won nine of their last 10 and appear to be serious about making the playoffs. New York has won 15 of their 21 games since the All-Star break. However, the Mets’ schedule is about to get much tougher. |
| 20. Cincinnati Reds | 20 | 52-58 | 5-5 | The Reds made a major splash at the trade deadline by acquiring Trevor Bauer. Cincinnati is sixth in the league in team ERA and now have another legit starter. |
| 21. San Diego Padres | 19 | 51-60 | 3-7 | San Diego punted the season at the trade deadline for good reason. They now sit near the bottom of the league in runs scored and allowed per game. San Diego has lost 15 of their last 21 games. |
| 22. Colorado Rockies | 22 | 52-60 | 5-5 | The gatekeepers between the bad and the horrible, Colorado has had a tumultuous season. They have been impressive at home where they hold a 29-27 record. Colorado has lost five of their last eight games. |
| 23. Chicago White Sox | 23 | 48-61 | 3-7 | Chicago is still a year away from being anything more than a below-average team. They have some promising young pieces that need to find consistency to truly compete. Chicago has lost 13 of 17 games since the All-Star break. |
| 24. Pittsburgh Pirates | 24 | 48-63 | 2-8 | Pittsburgh has lost 18 of their 22 games since the All-Star break. Based on their upcoming schedule, they could be much lower on this list in our next power rankings. |
| 25. Toronto Blue Jays | 26 | 45-69 | 6-4 | As expected, the Blue Jays were sellers at the deadline and made a bad team even worse. Burned badly by embarrassing returns at the trade deadline, it may take changes to the entire front office to right this ship. |
| 26. Miami Marlins | 27 | 42-67 | 5-5 | The Marlins are no longer among the worst teams in baseball. They have the worst record among National League teams but appear to have stockpiled enough young talent to change their future outlook. With promising prospects on both sides of the ball expected to make their debuts over the next two months, the popular narrative on the Marlins could see a change. |
| 27. Seattle Mariners | 25 | 47-67 | 6-4 | The Mariners continue to find ways to hit new lows. Seattle ranks 13th in the league with a healthy 4.94 runs per game. However, their pitching staff has held them back this season. They are one of only four teams allowing more than five runs per game. |
| 28. Kansas City Royals | 28 | 40-73 | 1-9 | Kansas City has lost nine of their last 10. They continue to have problems scoring runs and have allowed the fifth-most runs per game. |
| 29. Baltimore Orioles | 29 | 38-73 | 6-4 | One of the absolute worst teams in baseball, the Orioles may be stuck here for years. The Orioles have some interesting names on their staff but rank last in runs allowed per game. |
| 30. Detroit Tigers | 30 | 32-75 | 2-8 | The Detroit Tigers have found a way to firmly plant themselves in the basement of the league. Detroit is the only team scoring fewer than four runs per game and allowing more than five. |
