Friday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 49-36-2
Richardson has struck out six batters in back-to-back games. Those two performances came after four consecutive starts with four or fewer strikeouts. While Richardson has been inconsistent, he has taken advantage of strikeout-prone teams this season. Expect him to do the same against the A's tonight.
The A's have the second-most strikeouts in the league. Though Richardson has never faced anyone in their lineup, the A's have struggled against almost every pitcher this season. Richardson has only recorded more than six strikeouts once this season. That came in a six-inning start against the Seattle Mariners, the only team with more strikeouts than the A's. As long as Richardson can go four innings tonight, he will hit this over.
Gibson has had some disappointing starts this season. On six different occasions, he has struck out four or fewer batters, despite pitching six innings or more in five of those starts. On the other hand, Gibson has struck out at least six batters in three consecutive starts.
Gibson doesn't have great numbers against the Cubs, but he does have a lot of experience against them. He's struck out 24 batters in 94 at-bats, just slightly better than one strikeout per four batters. While this rate would require him to pitch very deep into today's game, he should improve upon his rate tonight.
The Cubs strike out at the eight-highest rate in the league. Gibson has pitched at least six innings in 10 of his 13 starts, so he will have plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the Chicago lineup today.
The Pirates' leading home-run hitter has an opportunity to elevate his stats tonight against Ryan Feltner. Feltner has a 5.74 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, and has allowed eight or more hits in six starts this season. In his last start, Feltner allowed just two hits in 5 1/3 innings, but that type of performance is an outlier when looking at the rest of his season.
Cruz has been a streaky hitter throughout this season. He hasn't hit safely in three consecutive games since early May, but he has recorded multiple hits in four of nine games this month, and two of his last four. Additionally, this game will be played at Coors Field, which could give Cruz the opportunity to show off his power.
