Baty is still looking for his first hit in the month of August, as he has started the month 0-18. Tonight, he will face Drew Smyly, a pitcher that he is 0-2 against in his career.
Smyly does have a WHIP of 1.35 this season and gave up six hits in his last start against the Reds. However, he also strikes out a lot of batters, and strikeouts have been a huge problem for Baty. He has been retired on strikes in eight of his 18 at-bats this month. Baty will be on a short leash tonight, so if he starts 0-1 or 0-2, he may not even see the plate again.
Two starts ago, Perez was shelled by the Atlanta Braves. He didn't even make it out of the first inning, as he gave up seven hits and six earned runs in 0.1 innings of work. Yet, he followed up that performance with a solid six-inning outing where he struck out seven and allowed just one earned run.
Aside from the game against the Braves, Perez has been solid over the last month. He has gone at least 5.0 innings in every other game, and he has at least six strikeouts in five of his last six. Earlier in the season, when he faced the Reds, Perez struck out seven in 4.2 innings. The Reds have the fifth-highest strikeout rate in the MLB. This line is on the money, but with how Perez is pitching and how the Reds are whiffing, the over is the right play.
When Spencer Strider steps on the rubber, you know you're in for a lot of strikeouts. Generally, I'd be nervous about taking an over this high, but I have learned not to bet against Strider this season. He has made eight starts since June 20, and he has struck out at least nine batters in every single one of those games.
The Pirates don't strike out a lot. They're 14th in the league in total strikeouts this season. But Strider has had success against every single team he has faced this season. He has pitched at least 6.0 innings in eight consecutive games. There is no reason to think that won't happen tonight, as well. And if he throws that many innings, he's likely going over.
