The Blue Jays (8-7) will try to snap their two-game slide this afternoon when they send Jose Berrios to the bump. The Orioles counter with Cade Povich in this American League East contest, which gets underway at 1:35 p.m. ET from Camden Yards in Baltimore, MD.
While I'm not too high on Jose Berrios and his 4.58 ERA, I do think he'll at least find success against Baltimore's Ryan Mountcastle. The first baseman is hitting a modest .250 in 2025, and he's 0-for-7 (.000) in his last three games. As for the head-to-head numbers, Berrios has dominated Mountcastle in the past, limiting him to 3-for-25 (.120) with two home runs and a double. The Toronto hurler just tossed 7.0, one-run innings against the Red Sox, and I think he'll carry his good form into today's game. I'll take Mountcastle to stay below 1.5 combined hits, runs, and RBI.
The Reds (7-8) are looking to break out the brooms against the visiting Pirates (5-10) this afternoon. Pittsburgh will send Carmen Mlodzinski to the bump, while the hosts opt for Hunter Greene. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. ET from the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, OH.
Just how good has Hunter Greene looked to start 2025? His Cy Young award odds have shrunk to as low as +600, making him the fourth-shortest choice in the market. The Cincinnati hurler is 1-1 with a 1.31 ERA (8th) and 0.63 WHIP (3rd). Most importantly, at least for this prop bet, he's seventh in the MLB in strikeouts (23). Across 20.2 innings, that's a K/9 rate of 10.0.
Greene draws a favorable matchup against the Pirates’ lowly offense. Pittsburgh is currently 30th in both team batting average (.190) and OPS (.579), and they're also striking out at the sixth-highest rate in the MLB (25.0%). Greene has held their current roster to a slash line of .197/.310/.377 over 61 at-bats, with 21 of those at-bats ending in punchouts (34.4%). I'll take Greene to rack up 8+ strikeouts today.
The American League West features a marquee pitching matchup this afternoon, as Texas' Nathan Eovaldi and Seattle's Logan Gilbert are set to square off. This game gets underway at 4:10 p.m. ET from T-Mobile Park in Seattle, WA.
Gilbert has been a force to start the 2025 campaign. He's 29th in ERA (2.55) and second in WHIP (0.62) and strikeouts (25). He has also walked only three batters across 17.2 innings of work while boasting a 12.7 K/9 rate.
Texas has struggled mightily this season, ranking 25th in runs per game (3.33). They're also 24th in both team batting average (.214) and OPS (.640) while sitting 29th in BABIP (.242). Additionally, the Rangers have struggled against Gilbert in the past, as their current roster is slashing a measly .178/.236/.361 over 169 at-bats. Gilbert has mowed them down in the past, and I expect more of the same with the right-hander throwing from his home rubber. I'll wager that he keeps Texas below 1.5 earned runs.
