Sunday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
The Royals (31-28) bounced back with a 1-0 victory over the Tigers (38-21) yesterday, and now they'll turn to Kris Bubic as they attempt to win this divisional series. Detroit counters with Keider Montero in this American League Central clash, which gets underway at 2:10 p.m. ET from Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO.
Kris Bubic has been carving up the league this season. The southpaw enters the series finale at 5-2, bringing in a league-leading 1.45 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP (14th). His 70 strikeouts are the 24th-most in the league. Bubic has cleared this line of 6.5 strikeouts in three of his last four outings (9, 5, 9, 7). He's averaging 6.4 strikeouts per start to go along with his solid 9.22 K/9 rate.
The Kansas City starter will be looking to dice up a Tigers team that has been struggling to put the bat on the ball recently. Over the last seven days, Detroit owns the third-worst strikeout rate (30.3%) in the MLB. Their current roster is also just 7-for-31 (.226) against Bubic with nine strikeouts in those 31 at-bats (29% strikeout rate). Give me Bubic to go for seven or more strikeouts this afternoon.
We have a rubber match in the Pacific Northwest, as the Twins (31-26) and Mariners (31-26) square off in an American League tilt. Chris Paddack takes the ball for Minnesota, while Seattle sends Luis Castillo to the hill. First pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. ET from T-Mobile Park in Seattle, WA.
Minnesota's Chris Paddack has been serviceable this season with a 3.92 ERA (59th) and a 1.20 WHIP (40th). However, I'm not convinced that the right-hander has completely turned around his career. I'm going to take Paddack to issue more than 1.5 walks this afternoon. He owns a modest 8% walk rate, which lands him in the 54th percentile. He has cleared this mark of 1.5 walks in six of his 11 outings this season. Paddack will have to navigate a patient Seattle offense that's third in walk rate this season (9.9%).
All roads lead to a marquee World Series rematch tonight, as the Dodgers (36-22) will try to break out the brooms against the visiting Yankees (35-22). New York opts for Ryan Yarbrough, while Los Angeles gives the nod to Yoshinobu Yamamoto. This Sunday Night Baseball matchup is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA.
I'll take a chance on this demon play, which says that Teoscar Hernandez will eclipse a combined 2.5 hits + runs + RBI. The Los Angeles slugger has sneakily been putting together a big-time season, ranking 19th in batting average (.298), 35th in home runs (10), 10th in RBI (42) and 19th in OPS (.880).
The main reason I like this play is that Los Angeles has dominated Yarbrough (3.06 ERA) in the past. Their current roster is slashing .302/.337/.677 against him over 96 at-bats. That's a 1.014 OPS. As for Hernandez specifically, he's 13-for-36 (.361) against him with seven home runs and two doubles. The Dodgers are primed to explode offensively, and I'll play Hernandez to go over 2.5 combined hits + runs + RBI.
