St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies recently hit a snag and lost consecutive games for the first time since April 23-24, and lost three straight for the first time all season. They've gotten back on track, won back-to-back games, and became the first team to 40 wins. We are on the Ranger Suarez Cy Young watch as he could become the first pitcher to ten wins. His 1.75 ERA leads the National League, and his 0.81 WHIP leads the MLB. This vast improvement has been due to better vertical movement on his sinker and increasing ground ball percentage, which is especially great when you play in a hitter-friendly ballpark.

The Cardinals were left for dead a few weeks ago, but they have suddenly surged. They are 12-4 over their last 16 and have won five straight series. It has much to do with the offense finally gaining some power with .450 slugging and 20 home runs in that span. Sonny Gray started the season with three starts allowing no runs, then hit a massive slump allowing 11 runs in two starts, but in his last two, he has allowed just one earned, and he had a fourth outing of allowing no runs.

The stat that stands out for Gray is his home-and-away splits: 0.93 ERA at home and 4.70 on the road, 0.73 WHIP at home and 1.26 on the road. Suarez has been phenomenal all year and in every situation.

New York Yankees at San Francisco Giants

It was the first game for “Arson” Judge at Oracle Park since the rumor of his signing with the Giants, and he lit it on fire with two home runs, becoming the first player to 20. It's unbelievable how fast Judge has turned it around this season when he was getting booed at Yankee Stadium at the beginning of the year. Over his last 31 games, he's hitting .361 with 16 home runs, 34 RBI, and a 1.343 OPS. The Yankees are on a monster run by going 14-4 over their last 18 and were the second team to 40 wins. With Clarke Schmidt going on the IL, Cody Poteet was recalled. He had a spot start earlier in the season and was great, going six innings, and allowing one earned in his first MLB appearance since July 2022.

Expectations were high for the Giants as they spent money to boost this roster. Some of these new faces have struggled; Jorge Soler is hitting .199, and Blake Snell has a 10.49 ERA, but Jordan Hicks has been great with a 2.70 ERA, and Matt Chapman is leading the team with eight home runs, .307 OBP, and is second with 54 hits. Logan Webb is their ace, and he's pitched like one recently with a 1.38 ERA in his last four, including his third and fourth start of going at least six shutout innings.

The problem has been that the Giants are 1-3 in those games because he's supported by a bullpen with a 4.34 ERA, and their 25 home runs allowed are the seventh most. The Giants should hit better tonight against a pitcher who has pitched just six big-league innings in the last two years, so look for this to be a high-scoring game.
