“Uncle Charlie” takes on arguably the worst lineup in the Majors tonight. The Marlins already possessed a weak offensive front, and following the departures of Jazz Chisholm Jr., Brayan De La Cruz and Josh Bell, this offense got even worse. It resembles a AAA squad if we’re being real, so starting pitchers shouldn’t have too much trouble carving through their lineup for the remainder of the season.
Morton hasn’t been at his absolute best, but a date with Miami might be all he needs. His curveball is still pretty nasty, and he struck out eight Marlins when he faced them earlier this season. The current Miami roster has a combined 36% K% across 45 plate appearances against him.
Sticking in the same game, let’s look to the Marlins rookie right-hander to find at least five strikeouts against the struggling Braves offense. Over the course of July, Atlanta had the second-highest K% (26.1%) and was 22nd in wRC+ (94) facing righties. Ten of the last 13 right-handed starters to face them have accrued at least five strikeouts.
Max Meyer owns a 10.7 K/9 at AAA this season and possesses a high-octane fastball/slider repertoire. This will be his second start back up in the Majors after a brief stint earlier this season. He struck out seven facing Atlanta in April, going six strong innings while allowing six hits and just one earned run.
The newly acquired Trevor Rogers makes his Baltimore debut in Cleveland tonight. There’s a decent chance this game is interrupted by rain, providing even more value on the under than there already was. Rogers is not “that guy,” pal. He ranks in the bottom 22nd percentile in K% and 14th in CSW% among starting pitchers. Baltimore’s lefty has failed to eclipse this mark in 11 of his last 17 starts and now draws a strikeout-averse team in the Guardians. Six of the nine batters in the projected lineup have a strikeout rate of 19% or less against lefties on the season.
