MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 75-41
Logan Webb’s strikeout numbers have been down this year, but this line is too low even with that fact. He takes on the Pirates, who own the fifth-highest K% (24.6%) and third-worst wRC+ (80) against right-handed pitching. Even in a down year of strikeouts, Webb has 5+ punchouts in six of 10 starts this season. Last season, he was over this line in 25 of 33 starts. He was also over it in 22 of 32 in 2022 and 19 of 26 in 2021. Add that all up, and we’re looking at a 70.1% hit rate over his last 101 starts.
Griffin Canning has not been one to strike out many this season, ranking in the bottom-11th percentile in K% and 39th in CSW% among starters. Now, he faces the Astros, who hardly ever strikeout themselves. Houston is 28th in K% (18.1%) against right-handed pitching on the season. Fifteen of the last 25 righties to face them have stayed under this line. Also, the Astros roster has combined for an 11.1% K% and .345 xwOBA in 54 combined plate appearances against Canning.
Yusei Kikuchi has been excellent all season long for the Blue Jays. He ranks in the 90th percentile in xFIP and xERA, 79th in K%, 86th in BB%, and 96th in PLV among all starters. He is under this in just five of his nine starts, but this is a matchup where he should particularly thrive. The White Sox have been horrific against left-handed pitching. They are 27th in batting average (.209) and 29th in wRC+ (69) when facing Southpaws. Eight of the 11 left-handed starters to face them have gone under this line.
