Sleeper Record: 99-50
Jesus Luzardo is coming off his worst performance of the season but draws an opponent he has had plenty of success against in the past. He and the Marlins take on the Mets in Queens, New York, and this line simply feels too low, given his strikeout potential. While it hasn’t been on display as well as in years past, he still is generating plenty of swings and misses, ranking in the 90th percentile among all starters. From 2022-2023, he went over this mark in 40 of 50 starts.
He has found at least four strikeouts in nine of his 10 starts and fired seven punchouts across six scoreless innings against the Mets on May 17. The Mets’ roster now owns a .289 wOBA and 26.4% K% in 110 combined plate appearances against him.
Seattle’s young right-hander has been dealing with forearm tightness throughout the season, impacting his leash to stay in the game for very long. He has been effective when out there but maxed out at 85 pitches last start against Oakland, finishing with six strikeouts. He has stayed under this strikeout line in six of his seven outings this season. So, while the matchup on paper is great, as he takes on the White Sox, his longevity in the game makes it a play to the under. This is a big line for anyone maxing out at six innings.
Taking the under on these short strikeout lines is always a sweat right off the bat. That said, there’s some value, given the matchup on hand. Sears faces the Padres, who hardly ever strike out. They are 28th in K% (17.7%) against lefties on the season. Just as important, Sears ranks in the 21st percentile in K% and 29th in CSW% among all starters this season. We’re getting a pretty good price on him, too, so let’s roll with the under in a tough matchup.
