MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 180-102 (63.8%)
Gilbert is coming off a tough outing against the Dodgers, but look for him to return to form taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. They are 29th in wRC+ (82) over the past 30 days against right-handed pitching. Additionally, they have the 10th-highest swing rate since the start of August. We have seen the likes of Bryce Miller, Gavin Stone, Mitch Spence, and Joey Estes all pitch into the seventh inning or later against them across the past week. Gilbert is a far superior starter than those names and has exceeded this line in 16 of his 26 starts on the year, and in seven of his 11 at home, where he pitches tonight.
Criswell might not go more than 80 pitches or so, but this line is simply too low for him. He has gone over this in 11 of his 14 starts on the season and has found four or more in nine of those 14 outings as well. The Blue Jays aren’t the easiest team to strike out, ranking 21st in K% (20.8%) over the past 30 days against righties, but the same could be said about the Astros. Criswell struck out four against them just five days back.
The Pirates facing a lefty is a recipe for plenty of strikeouts. They have the highest K% (34.2%) against southpaws over the last 30 days. Five of the six left-handed starters they have gone up against over the span have recorded at least eight K’s. Excluding a rain-shortened start, Steel has gone over this line in eight of his last 11 starts as well. He ranks in the top 75th percentile in both K% and CSW% among all starters this season.
