MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 207-122 (62.9%)
Jack Kochanowicz isn’t going to generate many swings and misses, but he has shown the ability to find quick outs and eat innings. He’s a sinker-heavy starter and throws that pitch 71% of the time. That is why he ranks in the 98th percentile in groundball rate. He has gone six innings in five of his last six starts. The primary reason for backing him tonight comes down to facing the lowly White Sox. They are dead last in wRC+ (74) over the past 30 days facing right-handed pitching.
The Texas Rangers send their young southpaw to the mound against the Blue Jays. Cody Bradford got shelled in his last outing, but before that tough matchup against the Diamondbacks, he had been on a heater, working with a 2.43 ERA (3.06 FIP) across his previous six starts. Over that time frame, he had gone at least six innings in five of those starts and went seven frames in two of them. Taking on the Blue Jays shouldn’t be an arduous task for him tonight, considering they are 23rd in wRC+ (83) against lefties since the start of August.
The strikeout angle didn’t quite work out for Nick Pivetta yesterday, as he finished a punchout short of going over his 6.5 line. Despite the loss, I’m going right back to the well on fading the Rays. They are fifth in K% (26.6%) and 28th in wRC+ (80) against righties over the past 30 days. Tanner Houck isn’t necessarily known for his strikeout prowess, but he can find five punchouts, especially in a good matchup. He ranks in the top 83rd percentile in CSW%. He has exceeded this line in 18 of his 28 starts.
