MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 191-109 (63.6%)
The Diamondbacks ace has been shaky all season long, but Zac Gallen can still find his way to some strikeouts here and there. Gallen found seven punchouts against a tough Dodgers lineup last start and had nine at Fenway Park the start prior. Now he gets the slumping San Francisco Giants at spacious Oracle Park. San Francisco is fifth in K% (26.2%) and 28th in wRC+ (86) when facing right-handed pitching over the past 30 days. Gallen struck out six Giants in his lone start against them at the beginning of this season.
Taking on the Dodgers is never a welcomed sight for any starter. Griffin Canning gets the pleasure of facing them tonight in the Freeway Series set in Anaheim. He has been dreadful throughout the season, especially when it comes to finding strikeouts. He ranks in the bottom 17th percentile in CSW% and 10th in K%. He has stayed under this mark in 18 of his 27 starts this season. The Dodgers lineup is finally healthy. Over the past two weeks, they rank second in wRC+ (145) and 18th in K% (21.7%) against righties.
Tanner Houck isn’t known for his strikeout prowess per se, but he is more than capable of reaching five strikeouts in the right matchup. He draws a fantastic one tonight, facing the Mets who have the third-highest K% (28.3%) against righties over the past two weeks. Seven of the past 10 right-handed starters to face them over this period have found at least six strikeouts against them. Houck ranks in the top 82nd percentile in CSW% and has recorded five or more strikeouts in 17 of his 27 starts.
