Washington Capitals at Philadephia Flyers

The Capitals are playing exceptionally well, going 8-1-2 in their last 11 games, and are holding down the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference by an impressive 10 points. What will make them tough to beat is that they rank second in goals scored (3.55) and allowed (2.45).

They also have a trio of potent scorers - Aliaksei Protas, Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin - who have each scored 20+ goals. We are especially paying attention to Ovechkin, who is just 17 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky for the all-time record of most goals scored in the NHL.

Goalie Logan Thompson has proven to be a great pickup and is a Vezina Trophy consideration, ranking third in wins, goals allowed and save percentage.

It’s been a brutal stretch for the Flyers, and their offense has been almost non-existent. They are 1-5-1 in their last seven games, scoring just eight goals and have been shut out three times during that span. Goaltending has been an even bigger problem, as they rank 27th in goals allowed (3.33) and have a dreadful -20 goals saved above expectations.

Washington already has two wins on the puck line against Philadelphia this year. With how these two teams are playing, the Caps should cruise to a win.

Parlay Odds: +549

Florida Panthers at St. Louis Blues

The Panthers are the reigning Stanley Cup champions, but with how good the Capitals are, they will have a tough time repeating. The Panthers have slightly regressed in some spots. They went from a 56.93% expected goal rate last season (second) to 53.83% (fifth), but the biggest regression has been with the defense going from leading the league with 2.42 goals allowed per game to 15th at 2.95.

Panthers goalkeeper Sergei Bobrovsky has looked great over his last five appearances, allowing two or fewer goals in four, but those were against bottom-tier offenses - Los Angeles (20th), San Jose (29th), Chicago (31st) and Anaheim (32nd). The other game was against the Capitals, where he allowed four goals.

The Blues are another underperforming offense. Their 2.67 goals per game ranks 27th. They are on a terrible stretch - 2-5-1 in their last eight. You cannot blame just one aspect because both sides of the puck have been awful. They are allowing 3.33 goals per game on a .888 save percentage and the offense is scoring 1.33 goals per game with a 47.6% Fenwick rate.

Jordan Binnington gets another tough assignment and his inconsistencies show against some of the league’s better offenses. He recently allowed three goals to Edmonton and four to Vegas, and had a .895 save percentage against Dallas.
