San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Odds & Game Pick (2020)

The 49ers have won two in a row to get back above .500. However, in their last four games, they are just 1-3 against the spread, and they failed to cover at home as 7.5-point favorites on Sunday night. The Cardinals took care of business against the Rams even though Kyler Murray was out with a hamstring injury. Yet, bettors do not seem impressed since the win came with Matthew Stafford out. Before that game, the Cardinals had lost four of their previous five. This line seems like it was made assuming that Murray will be out again this week. However, even if he is, Colt McCoy was solid in the Cardinals’ win, completing 26 of 37 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown. Therefore, no matter who is under the center, look for this line to drop below the key number. Current Line: 49ers -7.5 Predicted Final Line: 49ers -6.5

The San Francisco 49ers have fought through a lot of injuries to work their way to a 4-3 record in the ridiculously difficult NFC West. The 49ers have twice as many wins as the two-win Philadelphia Eagles. Yet, because the Niners are in the NFC West, they're in last place. The Eagles, because they are in the NFC East, are in first place. The 49ers are in greater danger than the Eagles of missing the playoffs, simply because they play in the NFL's toughest division. The leader of that division is the Seattle Seahawks, who just lost to NFC West foe Arizona in overtime this past Sunday. Three of the four NFC West teams have five wins. The Niners will try to hold the Seahawks at five wins and grab a fifth win of their own this weekend. The injury report remains an item of interest for the Niners, and it's also worth looking at for the Seahawks, who got banged up after their off week but will get one key piece back in Week 8.

Overview

The 49ers were 2-3 and in search of solutions. They beat the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots the next two weeks to get their season back on track. It started with their defense, which allowed just 16 points to the Rams and six to the Patriots. The 49ers' 33-6 win in Foxborough gave Bill Belichick his worst home-field loss (by point margin) as New England's head coach.

What is impressive about the 49ers' improvement on defense is that Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas are out for the season, harming the team's pass rush. San Francisco overcame those two huge losses and got contributions from the rest of its roster. The offense was fine, but the defense led the charge. The performance against New England was so overwhelmingly strong that Belichick benched Cam Newton in the second half. The physically imposing 49ers - recalling their 2019 dominance - had returned.

The challenge of this game for the 49ers is that unlike the Patriots and even the Rams - whose offense was not especially sharp this past Monday against the Chicago Bears - Seattle has an elite offense. Russell Wilson is a leading contender for 2020 NFL MVP. The Seahawks lost their first game this past Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals not because of a failure to move the ball - they gained almost 600 yards - but because Wilson threw three interceptions, all at critical points in the game. Wilson isn't likely to throw three picks in a second straight game. He isn't likely to throw at least two interceptions in consecutive games. Seattle's offense hits big plays and is therefore a tougher matchup for the 49ers, whose secondary has been banged up this season.

Injuries are a big part of this game. The 49ers won't have running back Jeff Wilson, and the Seahawks won't have running back Chris Carson. The 49ers won't have wide receiver, Deebo Samuel. The Seahawks don't know if cornerback Shaquill Griffin or safety Ugo Amadi will be able to play. The one encouraging piece of news for the Seahawks is that safety Jamal Adams is expected to return after several weeks on the shelf.

Trends

  • San Francisco is 4-2 ATS in its last six games.
  • San Francisco is 3-0 ATS on the road this season.
  • Seattle is 4-2 ATS in its last six games.

Bottom Line

The 49ers have some significant injuries but have clearly made adjustments. The Seahawks are going to score against San Francisco's defense, but the 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo might have turned the corner on offense. Last year's two games between these teams were both thrillers - the Seahawks won in overtime in Santa Clara, while the 49ers won in Seattle on a game decided on the last play. This game figures to go down to the last minute as well. The Niners, though, are surging and are more likely to weed out mistakes.

Prediction: San Francisco 34, Seattle 31
