Los Angeles Angels (+120) at Cleveland Guardians (-142) | O/U 7.0 (-105/-115)
The Angels (16-27) look to avoid being swept at the hands of the Guardians (23-21) on Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
Lefty Reid Detmers (1-3, 4.33 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) takes the ball for the Angels, while the Guardians counter with lefty Parker Messick (4-1, 2.30 ERA, 0.98 WHIP). The difference here might be not only in the quality of pitchers, but also in the ability of each team to handle left-handed starters. The Angels are just 6-7 versus lefties this season, while the Guardians are an impressive 10-3 against lefties, the third-best record in baseball.
Cleveland has outscored Los Angeles 10-4 through the first two games of this series, splitting the over/under. The Guardians have won four consecutive meetings in Cleveland, too.
The Halos are just 8-17 on the road this season, including 1-10 in the last 11 away games, while the over has a slight 6-5 edge in those 11 road games. The under and over have alternated in the past seven games.
Cleveland has won four of its past six home games, while going 5-2 in the past seven games overall. While the over has a 3-2 edge in the past five at Progressive Field, the under is 6-3 in the past nine home games. The over is 3-2 in Messick’s past five starts at home, while the Guardians are 4-1 in his past five starts in Cleveland.
Let’s back the Guardians to complete the sweep at home, and we’ll go low on the total.
Picks: Guardians Moneyline (-142) & Under 7.0 Runs (-115)
Washington Nationals (+134) at Cincinnati Reds (-158) | O/U 9.0 (-115/-105)
The Nationals (20-22) and Reds (22-20) meet in the middle contest of their three-game set at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. The Nationals trounced the Reds 10-4 on Tuesday night, as slight underdogs (+122), with the over (9.5) cashing.
Washington has moved to 4-2 over the past six games, and they’re also 4-2 over the past six on the road, while going 11-6 over the past 17 away from home.
Cincinnati’s pitching has been feast or famine lately, allowing 10 runs on Tuesday, as well as on May 8th at home in a 10-0 loss to Houston. On Saturday and Sunday, the Reds allowed one combined run.
They turn to lefty Nick Lodolo (0-1, 6.75 ERA, 1.13 WHIP), who made his season debut on Friday, allowing four runs and five hits (two homers) with a walk and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings in a 10-0 loss to the Astros in a 78-pitch effort.
Washington is 9-5 this season against left-handed starting pitchers, while Cincinnati is just 16-17 versus righties. The Reds will try to solve righty Jake Irvin (1-4, 5.22 ERA, 1.36 WHIP), who hasn’t lasted more than 5.2 innings in any of his eight outings.
Let’s back Lodolo and the Reds to get the job done at home, and we’ll go high on the total with a pair of giving pitchers.
Picks: Reds Moneyline (-158) & Over 9.5 Runs (-114)
San Diego Padres (+120) at Arizona Diamondbacks (-142) | O/U 7.5 (+100/-122)
The Padres (24-17) and Brewers (23-16) meet in the middle contest of a three-game set at American Family Field in Milwaukee. The Padres look to rebound from a 6-4 loss to the Brewers in the series opener, as Milwaukee won as moderate favorites (-146), and the over (8.5) cashed.
Righty Michael King (3-2, 2.76 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) goes for the Padres, while righty Jacob Misiorowski (3-2, 2.45 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) takes the ball for the Brewers.
The over hitting on Tuesday for San Diego was a rarity, as the under had hit in the previous five games, and it is still 8-2 in the previous 10 games, despite the total going high in the series opener. The under cashed in Milwaukee’s three-game sweep of the New York Yankees over the weekend, too, while the under is 6-2-1 in the past nine outings.
We’re definitely going to go low on the total with these two top-tier starters facing off. Let’s side with the Brew Crew, too, as Misiorowski is 2-0 with a 2.54 ERA in 28.1 innings across five home starts. Teams are hitting just .186 against him at American Family Field.
Picks: Brewers Moneyline (-142) & Under 7.5 Runs (-122)
