Week 3 of the UFL season is in the books. While two of the matchups last week were 14+ point blowouts, the first and last contests of the weekend were one-score games, including one that came down to a game-winning field goal.
The first matchup on Sunday started as a close contest in the first half. The Michigan Panthers had a 12-11 lead on the Houston Roughnecks before halftime. However, the Panthers outscored the Roughnecks 22-3 in the third quarter, thanks to a pair of touchdowns by E.J. Perry. Houston scored a touchdown in the fourth quarterback, but it was too little too late, losing 34-20.
Thankfully, the second game on Sunday was much closer and more competitive. The St. Louis Battlehawks defeated the San Antonio Brahmas 31-24 behind A.J. McCarron's two touchdowns. Chase Garbers had a two-yard touchdown pass to Alize Mack, cutting St. Louis' lead to seven late in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, San Antonio couldn't complete the comeback, turning the ball over on downs with 16 seconds left in the game.
However, all that happened last week. Now, it's time to move on to Week 4. With three matchups on Saturday this week, there is only one on Sunday between the Arlington Renegades and Houston Roughnecks. Let's look at my favorite bet from the lone UFL matchups on Sunday. UFL Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions: Week 4 (Sunday)
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Arlington Renegades vs. Houston Roughnecks
The Renegades have been victims of circumstances this season. They got blown out by the 3-0 Birmingham Stallions in Week 1. Arlington lost to the Battlehawks in Week 2 on a game-winning field goal by Andre Szmyt. Last week, they had a chance to get their first win of the season against the D.C. Defenders. Unfortunately, the Renegades mismanaged the game clock late in the contest, giving the Defenders the needed time for Matthew McCrane to nail a 49-yard game-winning field goal.
Houston is coming off a blowout defeat to Michigan, losing 34-20. After trailing by one at halftime, the Roughnecks had no offense in the second half, scoring nine points. Unfortunately, the 2024 season has been rough for Houston. They haven't won a game, losing by an average of 8.3 points per contest. The Roughnecks have scored the fewest points and have surrendered the second-most points in the UFL. Furthermore, Houston joins the Memphis Showboats as the only two teams with fewer than six touchdowns this year.
Unfortunately, the lone matchup on Sunday is between the two winless teams in the league. The UFL doesn't allow for a tie. Therefore, someone will come away with their first win of the season. Arlington has had late-game struggles in back-to-back weeks but could have won both contests. Meanwhile, Houston has struggled to keep games close this year. While backing the Renegades minus the three-point spread is an option, let's play it safe and take Arlington on the MoneyLine.
Pick: Renegades MoneyLine (-155)
