Thursday’s Best WNBA First Basket Scorers & Picks
(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
Las Vegas Aces at Dallas Wings
A'ja Wilson may be an obvious selection going into this contest - the payout returns the lowest profit as well. Nevertheless, the four-time MVP cannot be overlooked. Dallas does have a decent amount of size underneath the rim, thanks to Jessica Shepard and Alanna Smith. Yet, when Wilson has made the decision to get to the basket, there are very few who can provide adequate defense.
Wilson is averaging fewer than 25 points per game to start the season. The Aces center is shooting a powerful 55.3% from the field. Wilson is averaging 7.2 rebounds per game on the season. This absolutely provides the opportunity for a put-back if an initial shot is off target. Wilson owns a usage rate of 31.9% - the highest of any Aces player.
The veteran center ranks second in the WNBA in first-quarter scoring with 7.2 points through the first 10 minutes of gameplay. Las Vegas has the edge in size and athleticism on the tip-off. Wilson is the main scoring option for the Aces and is always a favorite to score the first basket.
Pick: A'ja Wilson (+380)
Indiana Fever at Golden State Valkyries
Kelsey Mitchell (6.3) and Caitlin Clark (6.4) lead the Indiana Fever in first-quarter scoring. Either of the two phenomenal scoring guards is capable of sinking the first basket. However, we feel Aliyah Boston may be best positioned to score the first field goal.
Golden State simply doesn't have the size and power to stop Boston from getting exactly what the South Carolina product wants offensively. Boston finished with 20 points and 16 boards when Golden State and Indiana last matched up on Friday. We expect the Fever center to once again assert her authority in the paint early and often.
Boston is averaging four points on 53.3% shooting from the field through the first 10 minutes. Clark and Mitchell accounted for the opening three buckets on Friday. Any of the three is a fantastic selection that will return a sizable payout.
It's been nearly a week since Indiana was on the floor, so they may want to start their offense with an attempt more likely to succeed. Boston scored 14 of her 20 points in the paint on Friday, and is a strong candidate to score the first basket tonight against Golden State.
Pick: Aliyah Boston (+650)
