Sunday's Best WNBA First Basket Scorer Bets
2025 Regular Season: 96-83-11 | 2025 Playoffs: 23-8 | (Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
New York Liberty at Washington Mystics
Jonquel Jones will face off against Shakira Austin for the opening tip. Austin won the tip last time out, while Jones did not. However, each team scored the first basket in their respective games.
For Washington, Cassandre Prosper made a layup six seconds into the game. The Liberty made a defensive stand on their first possession before Breanna Stewart drained a turnaround 7-footer to open the scoring for New York.
Stewie had 31 points in Friday’s season opener against the Sun, so first-year Lib HC Chris DeMarco clearly appears to be running the offense through the 2x WNBA Champ. Back her to get the scoring started this afternoon at CareFirst Arena.
Pick: Breanna Stewart (+425)
Seattle Storm at Connecticut Sun
Dominique Malonga will face off against Brittney Griner for the opening tip. Both bigs won their opening tips last time out. However, only Seattle scored the first basket.
For Seattle, rookie Flau’jae Johnson knocked down a 25-foot three-pointer just nine seconds into the game and her WNBA career. The Sun won their opening tip, and that was all they won that day as Aneesah Morrow’s 27-footer was off target, leading to a Breanna Stewart bucket and an eventual 31-point Connecticut loss.
Seattle clearly wants Flau’jae involved in the offense, early and often. Additionally, Johnson should be chomping at the bit after drawing two quick fouls on back-to-back possessions in the first five minutes of the game, which interrupted her early flow last time out. After a trey on their first possession, Flau’jae finished with just 12 points. As a member of Roc Nation, I expect the rapper/WNBA star to easily find that flow this afternoon. On a side note, Flau’jae’s music slaps.
Let’s back Miss Flau’jae Monae Johnson to score first again today if for no other reason than Vegas clearly doesn’t believe she can do it again at +900 odds.
Pick: Flau’jae Johnson (+900)
