United States (-500) vs. Mexico (+375) | O/U 11.5 (+104/-128)
The United States (2-0) takes on Mexico (2-0) on Monday night at Daikin Park in Houston, as these teams look to came command in Pool B play.
The USA had a strange game in the opener on Friday against Brazil, as it was outhomered 3-to-1 by the small-ball Brasileiros, and the Americans drew 17 total walks. The tournament favorites led the game just 8-5 heading to the ninth inning before the Brazilian pitching staff ran out of steam. On Saturday, Team USA took it out on Great Britain by a 9-1 score, and that’s a little more of what we expected to see, although we had just one total homer again.
For Mexico, it opened its tournament with an 8-2 win over Great Britain, although it was 2-2 heading to the eighth inning before Mexico broke through against an inexperienced Great Britain bullpen for six runs in the final two frames.
On Sunday, Mexico absolutely embarrassed Brazil, winning 16-0 in a mercy rule game. Mexico belted five homers, and the pro-El Tri crowd was going absolutely bananas with every hit, every run and every out. It was a festive atmosphere, and we’re likely to see that again on Monday.
Mexico will have to generate some offense against Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, so you can expect that we’re going to see a lot less offense for the Mexican side in this one. It will be the debut appearance for Skenes in the WBC.
Sluggers Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber have each delivered home runs for Team USA through the first two games, and it’s actually a bit surprising that Team USA has just two dingers with such a star-studded cast. Gunnar Henderson stepped into the lineup on Saturday against Great Britain, and he collected four hits. Both he and Schwarber lead the way for Team USA with four hits apiece through two games.
One thing is clear here. You cannot back Team USA straight up, risking five times your potential return. That’s way too much risk to assume, with such a meager reward. Instead, take Mexico with the points. They should be able to keep it within three runs in what could be a lower-scoring game.
As such, go rather aggressively on the under, too. And, if you really want some extra action on this game, you can also play the under on 6.5 runs (-118) in the first five innings, as Mexico should struggle to get much done against the All-Star right-hander.
Picks: Mexico +3.5 (-108) & Under 11.5 Runs (-124)
