Legalized sports betting has come to West Virginia just in time for the 2019 NFL season – and while the offering is modest to start, there should be plenty more wagering options before long. Two casinos have established both brick-and-mortar and online sports betting partnerships with two of the biggest players in the space, while three others are free to offer sports betting in-house but are not offering a mobile app at the moment.
Here’s a look at the current West Virginia sports betting landscape.

While this looks like a modest offering so far, two other West Virginia casinos have been approved to offer brick-and-mortar sports betting:
- Mardi Gras Casino*
- Wheeling Island*
*Mardi Gras and Wheeling Island were actually the first to launch an app (via BetLucky.com), but were forced to shut down due to issues with the platform provider; both casinos were forced to shutter their sports betting operations altogether, but are expected to be up and running again in the near future.
West Virginia Sports Betting History
West Virginia joined the fray a few months ahead of the PASPA repeal, legalizing sports betting in March 2018. And it didn’t take long for Hollywood Casino at Charles Town to make history, accepting bets during an Aug. 30 soft launch before conducting a full launch just two days later.
Online betting made its way into the state in December, with Mardi Gras and Wheeling Island offering mobile sports wagering through the BetLucky.com platform. But third-party vendor issues forced both casinos to not only cease their online offering, but to shut down their in-house sports betting, as well. Online betting only returned in late-August with the arrival of FanDuel and DraftKings.
