2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Odds & Picks
Latvia vs. Germany
Germany dominated Slovenia, 100-71, in their last matchup. They've gone 5-0 and just held Luka Doncic to 23 points on 2-for-11 from three. They've been getting incredible production from Dennis Schroder, who has added nearly 20 points per game this year. Schroder also had ten assists in the near 30-point win. They'll face a Latvia team that earned a 104-84 win over Brazil last time out. Latvia's offense shot nearly 58% from the field and hit 48.5% from downtown. They also turned the ball over just six times, and despite being outrebounded by ten, Latvia dominated Brazil in field goal percentage. Latvia is one of the few teams with depth on its bench. For example, Andrejs Grazulis had scored over 13 points per game off the bench. He just added 24 points on 11-for-15 from the field against Brazil in 30 minutes. However, Germany's played better defense and has way more notable talent. Give me Germany in this one.
Pick: Germany -8.5 (-112)
Slovenia vs. Canada
Slovenia lost its first game on Sunday to Germany 100-71. Slovenia shot 41% from the field and only 21.9% from three. That was mainly due to Luka Doncic, who shot 2-for-11 from deep in that game. No other player in the starting five added more than seven points. Slovenia certainly needs more depth beyond Doncic and Mike Tobey. Meanwhile, Canada escaped Spain in the Second Round of the FIBA World Cup with an 88-85 win. Canada lost an embarrassing game to Brazil but rebounded nicely, shooting over 49% from the field against Spain. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks combined to score 55 of Canada's 88 points and helped put together a 15-point margin in the fourth quarter in their come-from-behind win. Canada has qualified for the Olympics. But that's no longer on their mind. Slovenia is. If they can continue to shoot at a high rate and defend Doncic at a high level, they'll win this game.
Pick: Canada -8.5 (-112)
