College Football Week 0 Bets & Picks
Iowa State vs. Kansas State
We are seeing the edge toward K-State in the first game International Edition of Farmaggedon. The Wildcats Dylan Edwards will have the enviable task of replacing DJ Giddens at RB. Edwards is a 3rd Team Athlon Preseason All-American and has displayed impressive skills with the ball in his hands. The K-State OL departures have been addressed through the portal, the defense is very stable upfront and the defense has a top 25 Front 7 Defensive Rating. The secondary is the likely weakness of this K-State team is the secondary that lost two pieces to the NFL in Sigle and Parrish.
Iowa State is returning QB Rocco Becht, their top two RBs and are 27th in Offensive returning production. The loss of Darien Porter is rough, as the strength of this defense was the secondary which was 1st in Passing Yards Allowed last year. However, Jontez Williams was their highest graded CB and he returns and only one returning starter in the front 7 might be a net positive from the way they performed last season.
The edge for K-State in this game likely stems from Iowa State losing 129 targets in Higgins and 119 targets from Noel. The two NFL Draft picks had just under 50% of all targets for the Cyclones in 2024 and no one else had more than 34 targets. Iowa State graded 112th in Pass Blocking, 119th in Run Blocking, they lost their best OL in Jalen Travis, Becht and company graded 75th in Passing according to PFF and 23rd in Receiving. The Iowa State pass defense is strong but Kansas State has a run 1st offense and while Rocco Becht is experienced might make it close but K-State holds the edge going in.
Pick: Kansas State -3
Fresno State vs. Kansas
The Edge goes to the Jayhawks here likely because Fresno State is on the road and 'hitting the reset button' this season. Fresno State made wholesale changes to the coaching staff, bringing in Matt Entz from USC/North Dakota State. Matt Entz is a proven winner, making the playoffs in all 5 seasons as NDSU's HC and two National Championships in 19 and 21. Entz will do his best to get the turnaround quickly for a team that is typically a MWC contender but it will come with growing pains.
Fresno State will likely see multiple starters at QB, have very little returning on defense and only return one starter on offense and only two that played over 50% if their teams snaps last season on both sides of the ball. Kansas is 'middle of the road' for a P4 squad but with Jalon Daniels returning at QB and a Top-40 Transfer class according to 247, they should make short work at home against the Bulldogs.
Pick: Kansas -13
