British Open 2022: Tommy Fleetwood Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

The British Open returns to the Old Course at St. Andrews for the first time since 2015, when Zach Johnson hoisted the Claret Jug after a four-hole playoff against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman. What better place for the 150th Open Championship than the cradle of golf?

This is the final major of the year, and it’s not hyperbole to say that it could be one of the most consequential majors in history. The professional golf world has been riven by the formation of the controversial new LIV Tour, which has lured some top players away from the PGA Tour with lavish appearance fees. With members of the two tours exchanging verbal barbs through the media, a major involving players from both tours has an extra layer of drama.

This could also be the final time that Tiger Woods plays in a British Open at St. Andrews. Two of his three British Open wins have come at the Old Course, in 2000 and 2005. Can Tiger contend here again at age 46?

The course itself will play a starring role, too. The Road Hole, the Swilcan Burn, Principal’s Nose, the Coffin bunkers, the Hell bunker, the double greens – these iconic features will provide a marvelous stage for the world’s best players. Mother Nature is sure to be a factor as well. The Old Course can be a pushover if the wind doesn’t blow, but it can be a hellscape is the weather is truly Scottish, with plenty of wind and perhaps some rain.

How can we expect the favorites to fare at St. Andrews? Read on …

Tommy Fleetwood British Open History

Fleetwood will be making his eighth career appearance at the Open. The 31-year-old missed the cut in his first three attempts before finally making the weekend in 2017 at Royal Birkdale. He hasn’t missed the cut since, peaking with a runner-up finish to Shane Lowry three years ago.

Tommy Fleetwood’s Recent Form

Fleetwood splits time between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, where he ranks 14th on the money list. While he hasn’t found consistent success in the USA (three top 10 finishes in 15 starts in 2022), he has displayed much better form internationally, making 7 of 8 cuts with three top-10 finishes, all three coming in his last four DP World Tour starts. A pair of 67s on the weekend resulted in a T4 finish at last week’s Scottish Open. That followed a T10 at the Porsche European Open in Germany, so he’s feeling good about his game.

Tommy Fleetwood British Open Prediction

Fleetwood is no stranger to links golf as a native Englishman, but with only five career wins worldwide, that experience has only produced limited success. Winning at St. Andrews in the 150th edition of the Open Championship would be a childhood dream come true for Fleetwood, but he’ll need a few lucky bounces and have all aspects of his game in top form. Historically, he has been one of the best at hitting greens in regulation. Prior to this season, Fleetwood has been no worse than fifth in GIR on the DP World Tour. He ranks 44th in that category this season, and I could see him being in the mix on the weekend but not contending for the title. I’d consider him for a top 20 finish, but no better.
