The Padres will aim to maintain their hold on the third National League Wild Card spot when they visit the Giants on Saturday. San Diego’s Michael King (10-9, 3.00 ERA) and San Francisco’s Cesar Perdomo (0-0, 0.90 ERA) will toe the rubber. These squads have been NRFI darlings in 2026. There have been zeroes on the scoreboard at the end of the first inning in 44 of the Padres’ 72 away games (61%) and in 41 of the Giants’ 73 home games (56%).
Perdomo has been serviceable across two career MLB outings, allowing just one earned run in 10 innings. Both of those performances came on the road. The 24-year-old will now take the mound at Oracle Park, which ranks 27th in Statcast’s offensive park factors. Be mindful that San Diego has logged the league’s lowest OPS (.673) and run total (60) during the opening frame. Bank on Perdomo coming through on his end of the wager.
Talk about dominance. King has tossed an unblemished first inning in 26 of his 29 starts this campaign. The veteran right-hander has surrendered a .126/.239/.200 slash line and one home run in that stretch. Much like the Padres, the Giants have struggled to find consistency at the plate. They’re a bottom-10 team in first-inning on-base percentage (.311) and first-inning runs scored (63). Trust King to exploit a beneficial matchup.

Starting Pitchers: Walbert Urena vs. Andrew Alvarez
The Nationals will strive to lock up a series victory when they battle the Angels in the nation’s capital on Saturday. Washington will hand the baseball to Andrew Alvarez (2-6, 3.60 ERA), while Los Angeles counters with Walbert Urena (9-10, 2.74 ERA). The early advantage has gone to the pitchers in this head-to-head series lately. There’s been zero first-inning runs scored in seven of the past 11 clashes between the Angels and Nationals.
It’s worth pointing out how amazing these two arms have been in the opening frame. Alvarez has escaped the first inning unscathed in all 14 of his starts this season. There are dangerous hitters up and down Washington’s roster, but it’s a roster ranked 20th in batting average with runners in scoring position (.247). On the other side, there’s no depth in Los Angeles’ lineup behind Mike Trout and Zach Neto. The Angels sport the lowest OPS (.681) and highest strikeout total (1,393) in the American League. Expect a quick and clean first inning.
