Starting Pitchers: Carlos Rodon vs. Robbie Ray
The Padres aim to remain in the hunt for a National League Wild Card spot when they host the Yankees on Saturday. It’ll be a battle of veteran left-handers, with San Diego’s Robbie Ray (11-7, 3.14 ERA) and New York’s Carlos Rodon (4-3, 3.20 ERA) on the mound.
Targeting clashes at Petco Park has been a steady strategy in the NRFI department this season. There has not been a first-inning run scored in 42 of the Padres’ 70 home games (60%).
Ray has been on fire, logging a clean opening frame in each of his past nine starts. The two-time All-Star faced the minimum three batters five times in that strong stretch. Experience plays in his favor here.
Ray has limited New York’s roster to a .200/.238/.287 slash line with zero home runs across 80 at-bats. Trust him to stay hot against a Yankees lineup that sports the lowest first-inning on-base percentage in baseball (.282).
There’s another advantageous draw worth pointing out. The Padres have been an awful first-inning offense, ranking among the bottom three squads in runs scored (56), home runs (15) and OPS (.652). Rodon is in a great spot to succeed.
The former North Carolina State standout has escaped the first inning unscathed in five of his seven road starts in 2026 and has conceded just one run during two career outings (15. innings) in San Diego.

Detroit Tigers (+130) at Cleveland Guardians (-154)
Starting Pitchers: Framber Valdez vs. Parker Messick
American League Central rivals striving to keep their playoff hopes alive meet at Progressive Field on Saturday. The Guardians will hand the ball to Parker Messick (11-8, 2.46 ERA), while the Tigers counter with Framber Valdez (8-10, 4.36 ERA).
Note that both teams boast top-10 NRFI rates. The first inning has ended with zeroes on the scoreboard in 81 of Cleveland’s 142 games (57%) and in 74 of Detroit’s 141 games (52%).
Messick’s first-inning dominance is hard to overstate. The young right-hander has fired a scoreless opening frame in 24 of his 27 starts this season.
Surrendering a .189 batting average with runners in scoring position (RISP) allows him to wiggle his way out of jams. That plays directly into one of Detroit’s weaknesses. The Tigers have posted the fifth-lowest batting average with RISP in the Majors (.238). The edge goes to Messick.
On the other side, it’s been an up-and-down campaign for Valdez. The southpaw has worked an unblemished first inning in 10 of his 14 away starts.
Be mindful that the Guardians have failed to produce a first-inning run in six of their previous eight home contests and have recorded the league’s fourth-lowest OPS versus left-handed pitching (.670). Bank on Valdez getting the job done in a beneficial matchup.
