Tuesday's Best MLB Picks
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
New York Yankees (-305) at Chicago White Sox (+245) | O/U 9 (-112/-108)
Yesterday was another chapter in the embarrassing saga that was the Yankees’ pitching staff. The White Sox scored double-digit runs for just the second time this season and first since June 29th against the Rockies. At the start of the season, this was one of the best pitching staffs in the entire league; both the rotation and bullpen were in the top three in ERA. Over the last two months, it has plummeted; since June 15th, they are 28th in ERA (5.20), home runs allowed per nine (1.58) and quality starts (10).
Nestor Cortes has been struggling with the entire staff; over his last five starts, he has a 9.26 ERA and the Yankees are 1-4 in his starts.
No matter what happens in this series, it will not save the White Sox's season. They will still be at the bottom in every statistical category and will finish with one of the worst records in baseball history. There is a chance they might not beat the 1962 Mets modern-day record (42-120) because they face several teams under .500, including the Angels, Tigers, Athletics and Rangers.
This mediocrity allows them to look at some of their young talent, including Jonathan Cannon. Although it's been against some bottom-tier offenses, he has a 3.16 ERA in his last six appearances (five starts), with three quality starts.
Cannon is a heavy flyball pitcher, which will help the Yankees. There’s no juice with the Yankees winning, but we saw the over and it should happen again.
Pick: Over 9 Runs (-112)
Houston Astros (-135) at Tampa Bay Rays (+114) | O/U 8 (-105/-115)
The Astros looked like their dominant run was over earlier in the season. They were dealing with injuries, but when the pieces started to return, they started to play well and went from 10 games out on June 18th to tied for the lead. They have to keep pace with the Mariners, at least until they play them in the second-to-last series of the season.
Yusei Kikuchi was a trade deadline pickup. He's done well in his starts, allowing four earned runs in 11 innings, with the Astros winning both games.
The Rays were sellers for the first time in a while, as they were out of contention for most of the season. A lot of that had to do with injuries to some of their best pitchers, but the players on the field were struggling.
Shane Baz was one of those pitchers who was injured at the start of the season. He's been inconsistent since his return and is coming off his worst start when he allowed four earned runs in 4.1 innings against the Cardinals.
Pick: Astros Moneyline (-135)
