Friday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 18-15-1
Nathan Eovaldi has struck out 28 batters in five starts this season. He has struck out eight batters in two starts, but he has struck out six or fewer in his other three. Yet, Eovaldi has succeeded against teams prone to strikeouts, so his more than is the right play tonight.
His two eight-strikeout games have come against the Oakland A's and the Tampa Bay Rays. The A's have the second-most strikeouts in the league while the Rays rank eighth. The Reds enter tonight ranked fifth. Eovaldi doesn't have much experience against this lineup, but he has struck out nine in 24 at-bats.
Ross Stripling has struck out at least four batters in four of his five starts. Interestingly enough, the only time he failed to strike out at least four was when he went 7.0 innings against the Boston Red Sox, the team that leads the MLB in strikeouts.
Stripling has faced numerous good contact teams throughout the early part of the season. The Orioles will be another challenge. But the A's have shown they're willing to keep Stripling in the game even when he gives up a lot of hits and runs. Because of that, Stripling will have more opportunities than he should tonight, as he barely hits the over on this more than line.
Blake Perkins is batting .322 this season and is coming off a two-hit game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. That performance ended a three-game hitless streak. Perkins' batting average is impressive and he has more multi-hit starts than hitless starts this season.
He has no experience against tonight’s Yankees starter Luis Gil. Gil has allowed just eight hits in four starts, but he's also only pitched 19.2 innings. That means the bullpen will be a huge factor tonight. Though Perkins has no history against the Yankees' bullpen, with how he's been hitting, we like his chances of getting at least one hit off one of the three pitchers he faces.
